Island Of The Dead (2000 Film)
''Island of the Dead'' is a 2000 Canadian horror film written by Peter Koper and directed by Tim Southam. Malcolm McDowell stars with Talisa Soto and Bruce Ramsay. Plot The story centers around a group of people that arrive at Hart Island, which has recently been purchased by real estate tycoon Rupert King to build what he calls Hope City, supposedly to help the poor and homeless of the city. The only problem is that the City of New York has been burying their unknown and unclaimed dead there since 1869. The group of people include King along with his personal assistant, a New York cop looking for a missing girl's body, and some employees from the Department of Corrections with inmates used to bury the unknown dead. Initially, the personal assistant goes missing after being attacked by what appears to be a swarm of aggressive flies. Later, he's found dead and badly decomposed. Large maggots feed on the corpse. Peter Koper (January 1947 – May 21, 2022) was an American journalist, professor, screenwriter, and producer. He numbers among the original Dreamlanders, the group of actors and artists who worked with independent filmmaker John Waters on his early films. He wrote for the United Feature Syndicate, Associated Press, ''Baltimore Sun'', '' American Film'', ''Rolling Stone'', ''People'' and the website ''Splice Today''. He worked as a staff writer and producer for ''America's Most Wanted'', and has written television for Discovery Channel, Learning Channel, Paramount Television and Lorimar Television. Tim Southam (born October 1, 1961) is a Canadian television and film director. Career Tim Southam’s directing work includes Canadian films and international series. His 1994 dance film ''Satie and Suzanne'', which he also wrote, evokes Erik Satie's relationship with the painter Suzanne Valadon. The programme was nominated for a Grammy for best long-form video in 1997. His 1997 feature documentary, ''Drowning in Dreams'', which tracks several men’s obsession with a shipwreck lying at the bottom of Lake Superior, was screened at the 1997 Toronto International Film Festival and was nominated for a Genie Award. Bruce Ramsay (born December 31, 1966) is a Canadian film, television and stage actor. Career Ramsay's screen debut was opposite fellow Montrealer Elias Koteas in the film '' Malarek'' (1988). Ramsay and Koteas went on to appear in two other films together, '' Hit Me'' (1996), and '' Collateral Damage'' (2002). Hart Island, New York
Hart Island, sometimes referred to as Hart's Island, is located at the western end of Long Island Sound, in the northeastern Bronx in New York City. Measuring approximately long by wide, Hart Island is part of the Pelham Islands archipelago, to the east of City Island. The island's first public use was as a training ground for the United States Colored Troops in 1864. Since then, Hart Island has been the location of a Union Civil War prison camp, a psychiatric institution, a tuberculosis sanatorium, a potter's field with mass burials, a homeless shelter, a boys' reformatory, a jail, and a drug rehabilitation center.
