International Society For The Linguistics Of English (ISLE)
The International Society for the Linguistics of English (ISLE), founded in 2008, is a learned society of linguists. The organization's goals are to promote the study of the English Language at an international level, with a particular focus on the structure and history of standard as well as the many non-standard varieties of English, examining both their form and function. To that end, the society aims to provide a geographically and theoretically neutral central contact point for scholars who identify with these aims by including both academic linguists and members of the educated public who have an interest in English linguistics. The society allows scholars the opportunity convene beyond borders of members' country-specific professional societies (e.g., British Association for Applied Linguistics (BAAL), American Association for Applied Linguistics (AAAL), etc.). Nonstandard Dialect
A nonstandard dialect or vernacular dialect is a dialect or language variety that has not historically benefited from the institutional support or sanction that a standard dialect has. Like any dialect, a nonstandard dialect has an internally coherent system of grammar. It may be associated with a particular set of vocabulary, and spoken using a variety of accents, styles, and registers. Geoffrey Neil Leech FBA (16 January 1936 – 19 August 2014) was a specialist in English language and linguistics. He was the author, co-author, or editor of over 30 books and over 120 published papers. His main academic interests were English grammar, corpus linguistics, stylistics, pragmatics, and semantics. Life and career Leech was born in Gloucester, England on 16 January 1936. He was educated at Tewkesbury Grammar School, Gloucestershire, and at University College London (UCL), where he was awarded a BA (1959) and PhD (1968).
