Institute Of Chartered Accountants Of Nigeria
The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) is a professional accountancy body in Nigeria. It is one of the two professional accountancy associations with regulatory authority in Nigeria, the other being the Association of National Accountants of Nigeria (ANAN). The relationship between the two organizations has been tense. In 2007 ICAN attempted to have a bill declaring ANAN void. Formation and growth The Association of Accountants of Nigeria (AAN) was formed in 1960 with the goal of training accountants, and was established in part by Akintola Williams. ICAN was created by an Act of Parliament No. 15 on 1 September 1965 from existing accounting and auditing organisations including the AAN, and is headquartered in Lagos. As of 2020, ICAN has over 50,000 members. Standards and authority ICAN has based its practices on those of British chartered accountancy institutes. A professional accounting body is an organization or association of accountants in a particular jurisdiction. Usually a person needs to be a member of such professional body to hold out to the public of the jurisdiction as an accountant. The designations for qualified accountants vary from jurisdiction to jurisdiction, such as Cost and Management Accountant (CMA), Chartered Accountant (CA/ACA), Chartered Certified Accountant (CCA), Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA), Certified Public Accountant (CPA), Certified Practising Accountant (CPA), Chartered Management Accountant (ACMA), Certified Management Accountant (CMA), or Chartered Public Finance Accountant (CPFA). The Institute of Public Accountants (IPA) is one of the three legally recognised professional bodies for accountants in Australia. The IPA represents more than 40,000 members and students working in industry, commerce, government, academia and professional practice. The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) is the central bank and apex monetary authority of Nigeria established by the CBN Act of 1958 and commenced operations on 1 July 1959. The major regulatory objectives of the bank as stated in the CBN Act are to: maintain the external reserves of the country, promote monetary stability and a sound financial environment, and act as a banker of last resort and financial adviser to the federal government. Pan-African Federation Of Accountants
The Pan African Federation of Accountants (PAFA) is the regional body that is aimed to represent African professional accountants with one and louder voice, particularly in relating with International Federation of Accountants (IFAC). It was inaugurated in Dakar, Senegal on 5 May 2011. Inauguration The first president, elected at the inaugural meeting in Dakar, Senegal, was Major General Sebastian Achulike Owuama. Owuama is also president of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria and of the Association of Accountancy Bodies in West Africa. Dr. Mussa J. The Association of Accountancy Bodies in West Africa (ABWA) is a regional organization of the International Federation of Accountants (IFAC). As of 2011 there were ten West African accounting institutes represented in ABWA. History The association was established on 10 August 1982 in Lagos, Nigeria, and was registered as a corporation in 1994. ABWA was initially collocated with the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (lCAN) in Lagos. In May 2002 the association's headquarters moved to the ICAN building in Abuja. The purpose of the Association is to develop accountancy in the region. Recognized non-governmental accountancy bodies in West African countries are encouraged to join the association. Prince Rasaq Adekunle Quadri is a Nigerian accountant who was President of the Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria (CITN) from 2009 to 2011, and was elected the first President of the West African Union of Tax Institutes (WAUTI) in March 2011. Birth and education Quadri's father was a Tax Practitioner and Chartered Accountant, and his mother was a businesswoman. He was raised in Lagos State, then went to the Federal Polytechnic, Idah in Kogi State where he earned a Higher National Diploma in Accountancy in 1985. The Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria (CITN) is a professional organization in Nigeria whose members are certified as qualified tax practitioners or administrators. Organization The CITN was formed in February 1982 and chartered by the Federal Government of Nigeria by the enabling Act No. 76 of 1992. Members of the institute may be Accounting, Legal or other professionals who have obtained the relevant tax expertise. The institute provides training and conducts examinations to determine eligibility. The CITN offers an Advanced Diploma in International Taxation to CITN members who work in international tax. Umaru Musa Yar'Adua (16 August 19515 May 2010) was a Nigerian politician who, was the President of Nigeria from 2007 to 2010. He was declared the winner of the Nigerian presidential election held on 21 April 2007, and was sworn in on 29 May 2007. He served previously as the governor of Katsina state from 1999 to 2007; and was a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
