Institute For Doctoral Studies In The Visual Arts
The Institute for Doctoral Studies in the Visual Arts is a private low-residency graduate school based in Portland, Maine. It was founded in 2006 by George Smith, who had previously created the Master of Fine Arts program at the Maine College of Art & Design. Smith created the program to offer the Doctor of Philosophy to visual artists who wanted an academic credential beyond the Master of Fine Arts, a group he termed "artist-philosophers". African-American art historian David Driskell called the institution "one of the single most important developments in the recent history of art education." The Artist's Magazine
''The Artist's Magazine'' is a monthly magazine for artists formerly published by F+W Media in Cincinnati, Ohio. The magazine was founded in 1983 and claims a circulation of 60,000. The founding company was Fletcher Art Services. F&W Publications acquired the magazine in September 1986. In 2019 the company stopped its operations and its publications were sold. Macanta Investments, LLC, acquired ''The Artist's Magazine''. It focuses on painting technique, special effects, marketing, and business topics. It published the book, ''The Pencil Box: A Treasury of Time-Tested Drawing Techniques and Advice'' (2006). David Driskell
David C. Driskell (June 7, 1931 – April 1, 2020) was an American artist, scholar and curator; recognized for his work in establishing African-American Art as a distinct field of study. In his lifetime, Driskell was cited as one of the world’s leading authorities on the subject of African-American Art. African-American Art
African-American art is a broad term describing visual art created by African Americans — Americans who also identify as Black. The range of art they have created, and are continuing to create, over more than two centuries is as varied as the artists themselves.
