Inheritance (TV Series)
''Inheritance'' was a 1967 Granada produced ITV drama based on a trilogy of novels by Phyllis Bentley - ''Inheritance'' (1932), ''The Rise of Henry Morcar'' (1946) and ''A Man of His Time'' (1966). The ten-part period drama revolved around the fortunes of the Oldroyds, a Yorkshire mill owning family from 1812 to 1965. The early part of the series featured the Luddite riots involving the burning of mills and the subsequent execution of those responsible. The series turned the expression "There's trouble at mill" into a catchphrase. The series featured Michael Goodliffe, John Thaw and James Bolam in leading roles over the generations. Each new generation saw Goodliffe and Thaw playing father and eldest son with Bolam usually playing the part of the younger son. Basil Dignam
Basil Dignam (24 October 1905 – 31 January 1979) was an English character actor. Basil Dignam was born in Sheffield, West Riding of Yorkshire. Before the acting, he tried many jobs, from a company clerk to a journalist. He acted on film and television between 1948 and 1978. He often appeared as an authority figure, such as Mr Justice Poynter in ''Crown Court,'' as a police officer, army general or peer. Television appearances include ''The Prisoner'': ''Checkmate'' (1967) and '' The Champions'' (1968), as Sir Frederick in episode 2 "The Invisible Man". Personal life He was married to actress Mona Washbourne from 1940 until his death in 1979. His brother Mark Dignam was also a professional actor. Basil Dignam died, aged 73, in Westminster, London. David Burke (born 25 May 1934) is an English actor, known for playing Dr. John Watson in the initial series of Granada Television's 1980s '' The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes'', which starred Jeremy Brett in the title role. He also starred as Joseph Stalin in the last two episodes of ''Reilly, Ace of Spies''. Early life Burke was born on 25 May 1934 in Liverpool, England, and trained at Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. Career In the theatre, Burke originated the part of Niels Bohr in Michael Frayn's ''Copenhagen''. Burke played Dr. Watson in '' The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes'' for the initial series and then left the programme after receiving an invitation to join the Royal Shakespeare Company along with his wife, Anna. Judy Wilson (1938 – 1 April 2006) was an English actress. Her most notable role was that of Mrs. Greenlaw, the housekeeper, in '' All Creatures Great and Small''. Her first known appearance was as a maid in Laurence Olivier's 1970 drama '' Three Sisters''. In 1979 she appeared in ''Murder by Decree''. Wilson made her debut in ''All Creatures'' in its 1985 Christmas Special. She was the third housekeeper of Skeldale House — after the original, Mrs. Hall (Mary Hignett), and Mrs. Hubbard (Marjorie Suddell) in the 1983 Christmas Special. She made five appearances in total, the others being the first four episodes of series 4: "One of Nature's Little Miracles", "Barks And Bites", "The Bull With the Bowler Hat" and "The Pig Man Cometh". Wilfred Pickles
Wilfred Pickles, OBE (13 October 1904 – 27 March 1978) was an English actor and radio presenter. Early life and personal life Pickles was born in Halifax in the West Riding of Yorkshire. He moved to Southport, Lancashire, with his family in 1929, and worked with his father as a builder. He joined an amateur dramatic society, and in a local production there met Mabel Cecilia Myerscough (1906–1989), all of whose family had been connected with the stage. He remained a proud Yorkshireman, and having been selected by the BBC as an announcer for its North Regional radio service, he went on to be an occasional newsreader on the BBC Home Service during the Second World War. He was the first newsreader to speak in an accent other than Received Pronunciation, "a deliberate attempt to make it more difficult for Nazis to impersonate BBC broadcasters", and caused some comment by wishing his fellow northerners "Good neet".
