''Indian and the Puritan'' is a 1916 marble and bronze monument by Gutzon Borglum, the sculptor of Mount Rushmore, opposite 5 Washington Street, the Newark Public Library, in Washington Park of Newark in Essex County, New Jersey. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places on October 28, 1994, as part of the Public Sculpture in Newark, New Jersey Multiple Property Submission. With History and description The monument is a bronze lamp standard featuring two carved marble sculptures, a Native American and a Puritan. The lamp standard has Newark's city seal and two inscriptions that describe the city's history. The monument was commissioned by the city to commemorate its 250th anniversary, 1666–1916. It was moved to its current location in Washington Park in 1977. ''Seated Lincoln'' is a 1911 sculpture by Gutzon Borglum, located next to the Essex County Veterans Courthouse in Newark, Essex County, New Jersey. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places on March 30, 1995, for its significance in art. With History and description The bronze sculpture depicts Abraham Lincoln larger than life size, seated at one end of a bench also cast in bronze. Lincoln is bearded but bare headed, with his stovepipe hat resting on the bench beside the man's hand. The bronze is set on a low stone platform with five steps, beside the steps to the courthouse. The informal composition was an unusual departure from the usual monumental depiction of Lincoln standing or enthroned on a high plinth. It was inspired by Borglum's research, reading that Lincoln often sat alone on a bench in the White House garden to gather his thoughts during the American Civil War, particularly when there was bad news. ''Wars of America'' is a "colossal" bronze sculpture by Mount Rushmore sculptor Gutzon Borglum and his assistant Luigi Del Bianco containing "forty-two humans and two horses", located in Military Park, Newark, Essex County, New Jersey, United States. The sculpture sets on a base of granite from Stone Mountain. The sculpture was erected in 1926, eight years after World War I ended, but its intent was broadened to honor all of America's war dead. In describing it, Borglum said "The design represents a great spearhead. Upon the green field of this spearhead we have placed a Tudor sword, the hilt of which represents the American nation at a crisis, answering the call to arms."
