The 1994 Idaho gubernatorial election was held on November 8 to select the Governor of Idaho, governor of the U.S. state of Idaho. Democratic Party (United States), Democratic incumbent Cecil Andrus chose not to seek reelection after a total of fourteen years in office. Former state senator and Republican Party (United States), Republican Party chair Phil Batt rallied to defeat Democratic Idaho Attorney General, attorney general Larry Echo Hawk; the victory was the first by a Republican 1966 Idaho gubernatorial election, in 28 years. Lieutenant Governor Of Idaho
The lieutenant governor of Idaho is a constitutional statewide elected office in the U.S. state of Idaho. According to the Idaho Constitution, the officeholder is elected to a four-year term. The current lieutenant governor of Idaho is Republican Janice McGeachin, who took office January 7, 2019. Powers and duties The power of the lieutenant governor of Idaho derives from Article IV, Sections 12 and 13 of the Idaho Constitution, which provides that the office is first in line of succession to the governor of Idaho. It also dictates that the lieutenant governor serves as the presiding officer of the Idaho Senate. The lieutenant governorship has been a constitutional office in Idaho since statehood in 1890. 1994 United States Gubernatorial Elections
United States gubernatorial elections were held on November 8, 1994, in 36 states and two territories. Many seats held by Democratic governors switched to the Republicans during the time known as the Republican Revolution. Indeed, this would be the first election since 1969 that Republicans won the majority of governorships. Before the elections, 21 seats were held by Democrats, 14 held by Republicans, and one by an independent. After the elections, 11 seats would be held by Democrats, 24 by Republicans, and one by an independent. The elections coincided with the midterm elections for the Senate and for the House of Representatives. Roger Fairchild, a former state senate majority leader from Fruitland, won the Republican nomination in May, but was easily defeated in November by the popular Andrus. Ron Beitelspacher
Ron Beitelspacher (born January 25, 1945, in Hoven, South Dakota) is a former Democratic Idaho state senator. He finished second behind Larry EchoHawk in the 1994 Democratic primary for Governor of Idaho. A resident of Grangeville and a lineman by trade, Beitelspacher represented North Central Idaho in the Idaho Legislature in the 1980s and early 1990s. He served briefly in the Idaho House of Representatives in 1979 after being appointed to fill a vacancy by Gov. John V. Evans. He was appointed to the Idaho Senate in 1980, again by Evans to fill a vacancy. Beitelspacher was elected to the Idaho Senate in 1980 from a North Central Idaho based floterial district and reelected throughout the 1980s. Towards the end of his Idaho Senate career Beitelspacher served as the ranking member of the resources and environment committee.
