An Institute of Technology (IT) is a type of higher education college found in Republic of Ireland, Ireland. In 2018, there were a total of fourteen colleges that use the title of Institute of Technology, which were created from the late 1960s and were formerly known as Regional Technical Colleges. The exception to this was Dublin Institute of Technology which emerged independently of the Regional College system. The Technological Universities Act of 2018 allowed the merger of two or more IoTs into Technological Universities, which saw the creation of the Technological University Dublin in 2019; Munster Technological University and Technological University of the Shannon: Midlands Midwest, Technological University Shannon: Midlands Midwest in 2021; and Atlantic Technological University and South East Technological University in 2022. Upon its dissolution, the institute had 17,000 students studying in art, business, engineering, music, drama and science disciplines. HETAC
The Higher Education and Training Awards Council () (HETAC), the legal successor to the ''National Council for Educational Awards'' (NCEA), granted higher education awards in Ireland beyond the university system from 2001 to 2012. HETAC was created in 2001, subject to the policies of the National Qualifications Authority of Ireland, and, specifically, granted qualifications at many Institutes of Technology and other colleges. A Vocational Education Committee (VEC) () was a statute, statutory local education body in Republic of Ireland, Ireland that administered some secondary education, most adult education and a very small amount of primary education in the state. Before 1992 VECs had authority over the Dublin Institute of Technology and the Regional Technical Colleges. They existed from 1930 to 2013, when they were replaced by Education and Training Boards. Establishment VECs were originally created by the Vocational Education Act 1930, as successors to the Technical Instruction Committees established by the Agriculture and Technical Instruction (Ireland) Act 1899.
