Improvised Music from Japan is a music website and record label. The website was originally known as ''Japanese Free Improvisers''. As its name suggests, it concentrates on Japanese and Japan-based Musical improvisation, musical improvisers, particularly free improvisation, free improvisers. It was founded in 1996 by Yoshiyuki Suzuki. Releases In December 2001, a compilation box-set, also called ''Improvised Music from Japan'', was released to mark the fifth anniversary of the website. It was a 10 CD collection of previously unissued material from a variety of Japanese musicians (some of them collaborating with Europeans and Americans). Michihiro Sato
Michihiro Sato ( 佐藤 通弘, ''Satō Michihiro''; surname Sato; name sometimes listed as Sato Michihiro; (born 1957), is a prominent Japanese player of the ''Tsugaru-jamisen''. Born in Machida, Tokyo, Japan, his mother was a traditional dancer and musician. He became interested in the ''Tsugaru-jamisen'' at an early age after hearing it on a radio broadcast and began intensive study of the instrument in 1970, at the age of 13. At that time, few young people were interested in this instrument; indeed, most of the other students were elderly. When he was a junior in college he moved to Hirosaki, Aomori to become an apprentice to master musician Chisato Yamada. Otomo Yoshihide
is a Japanese composer and multi-instrumentalist. He mainly plays guitar, turntables and electronics.
