Hutchins, Texas
Hutchins is a city in Dallas County, Texas, United States. Its population was 5,338 at the 2010 census. History The area was first inhabited by families around 1860 as a trading place for immigrants who settled along the west bank of the Trinity River and new arrivals who crossed the Trinity at Dowd's Ferry from the east. The town received its name from railroad developer William J. Hutchins, who was then president and general manager of the Houston and Texas Central Railroad (H&TC). The railway was completed through Hutchins in 1872. That same year a post office opened in the community. The population of Hutchins grew to around 250 residents in 1884 and topped 300 by 1890. That figure declined slightly to 204 in 1904, but had risen to 500 in 1926. Hutchins was officially incorporated in 1945. Geography According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 33.6 square miles (87.0 km), of which, 33.5 square miles (86.7 km) of it is land and 0.1 square miles (0.3 km) of it (0.30%) is water. Demographics At the 2000 census there were 539 people, 195 households, and 158 families in the town. The population density was 16.1 people per square mile (6.2/km). There were 219 housing units at an average density of 6.5 per square mile (2.5/km). The racial makeup of the town was 97.40% White, 1.86% Native American, and 0.74% from two or more races. Com-Pac Yachts is an American brand of sailboats, made by the Hutchins Co., Inc., a boat builder based in Clearwater, Florida. The company specializes in the design and manufacture of fiberglass sailboats. Over time the brand and the company have become synonymous. The company was founded by W.L. "Les" Hutchins Sr. in 1957 and started building sailboats in 1970. History Les Hutchins had started as a farmer and trained tool and die maker, but became an inventor, designing many automotive accessories and parts and even a folding high chair. He established his first company in St. Louis, Missouri, doing metal-stamping and fabrication work, making parts of the automotive industry under subcontract.
