Herndon High School is a fully accredited four year public high school in Herndon, Virginia, United States. Herndon serves grades 9-12 and is a part of the Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) system. Herndon High School serves the town of Herndon and the northern part of the unincorporated community of Reston. Herndon's mascot is the Fighting Hornet. History Herndon High School opened in 1911 on Locust Street. In 1930, seventy-one students enrolled, with classes such as economics, agriculture, and business education offered, with classes in industrial arts later offered. In 1942, the school opened the first school cafeteria in Fairfax County. In the early 1950s, the building was expanded to support more students. In 1961, Herndon Intermediate School began within the Herndon High School building. Herndon is a town in Fairfax County, Virginia, in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area of the United States. The population was 23,292 at the 2010 census. In 2020, the population was estimated to be 24,532, which makes it the largest of three incorporated towns in the county. The actual dimensions of the town of Herndon are fairly small. Tanya Biank is an American journalist, author, and speaker. She has written two books, one of which was the inspiration for the television show, ''Army Wives''. Early life and education Biank comes from a family of combat veterans and active-duty service members. Her father was in the United States Army, retiring as a colonel. He served for 33 years. Her sister, Brigadier General Maria Biank, was deployed to Iraq in 2009, the same time as Tanya Biank's husband. Biank graduated from Herndon High School in 1989. She attended Pennsylvania State University, where she received her bachelor's degree in journalism. She graduated in 1993. After college, Biank lived in Korea for one year. She studied language and culture, while also teaching English as a second language at an all-girls school.
