Henry Kenny (Australian Politician)
Henry Edward Kenny (1 March 1853 – 25 August 1899) was an Australian newspaper proprietor and politician who was a member of the Western Australian Legislative Assembly, Legislative Assembly of Western Australia from 1897 to 1899, representing the Electoral district of North Murchison, seat of North Murchison. Kenny was born in North Fremantle, Western Australia, to Bridget (née Reynolds) and John Kenny. He had moved to Geraldton by 1879, working initially as a storekeeper and later as a draper. Kenny later developed interests in mining (on the Murchison River (Western Australia), Murchison goldfields), but came to the attention of the public as the manager of the ''Geraldton Guardian#Merged 1929, Geraldton Express'', the major newspaper in the region. 1897 Western Australian Colonial Election
Elections were held in the state of Western Australia between 27 April and 26 May 1897 to elect 44 members to the Western Australian Legislative Assembly. The Ministerialist group led by John Forrest won a third term in office as a result of the elections. The poll took place based on boundaries established in the ''Constitution Act Amendment Act 1896'', which increased the number of members from 33 mainly by adding new seats in the Goldfields region, and had been called a year earlier than was necessary. In 18 of the 44 seats, only one candidate nominated and polls were not held. As payment of members was not introduced until 1900, the Political Labour Party, formed in 1896, had found it difficult to attract candidates who could afford to enter Parliament, but three of its candidates ran for election, and Charles Oldham, a former president of the Trades and Labor Council, became the first Labour member of Parliament in Western Australia. The ''Geraldton Guardian'' was established at Geraldton, Western Australia on 1 October 1906 to serve the Victoria and Murchison Districts. It was launched on principles of liberal democracy, state rights, nationalism and British preference. History Founding The ''Geraldton Guardian'' was established by the proprietors, Constantine and Gardner, at the "Guardian Buildings", Marine Terrace, Geraldton, Western Australia. Edward Constantine, the senior partner of Constantine and Gardner was born in Cornwall, England but emigrated to South Australia with his parents at the age of three. The Murchison River is the second longest river in Western Australia. It flows for about from the southern edge of the Robinson Ranges to the Indian Ocean at Kalbarri. The Murchison-Yalgar-Hope river system is the longest river system in Western Australia.
