Hawaii Gubernatorial Election, 1998
The 1998 Hawaii gubernatorial election was held on November 3, 1998. Incumbent Democratic Party (United States), Democratic Governor of Hawaii Ben Cayetano ran for re-election to a second and final term, and he was contested by Mayor of Maui, Maui Mayor Linda Lingle. The race between Cayetano and Lingle was close, with Lingle holding a sizable polling advantage. Ultimately, Cayetano narrowly won re-election to a second term in the closest gubernatorial election in Hawaii's history. This election, along with the 1966 election, marks the only time a Democrat was elected governor without sweeping every county in the state. 1998 United States Gubernatorial Elections
United States gubernatorial elections were held on November 3, 1998, in 36 states and two territories. Going into the election 24 of the seats were held by Republicans, 11 by Democrats, and one by an Independent. The elections changed the national balance of power by the loss of one Republican and the gain of one Independent, although it shifted in nine states. Democrats gained open seats in California and Iowa and defeated incumbents Fob James of Alabama and David Beasley of South Carolina, while Republicans won open seats in Colorado, Florida, Nebraska, and Nevada and the Reform Party won an open Republican governorship in Minnesota. By the end of the election, 23 seats were held by Republicans, 11 by Democrats, one by the Reform Party, and one by an Independent. The ''Molokai Advertiser-News'' is a weekly newspaper in Hawaii founded in 1984. It is published on the island of Molokai, Hawaii, United States. The ''Molokai Advertiser-News'' is one of two newspapers published on the island of Molokai, the other being the ''Molokai Island Times''. In 1998 the founder, George G. Peabody, filed a court case against a competing free paper, ''The Dispatch'', for unfair competition via removing copies of the ''Advertiser-News'' and replacing them with its own paper. The State of Hawaii Intermediate Court of Appeals found in favor of the ''Molokai Advertiser-News'' in 2000. The paper was founded in 1984 by George G. Peabody who as of 2014 still serves as the editor and chief investigatory reporter. In 1998 and 2002, Peabody ran for governor of Hawaii as a Libertarian. Frank Fasi
Frank Francis Fasi (August 27, 1920 – February 3, 2010) was an American politician who was the longest-serving Mayor of Honolulu, Hawaii, serving for 22 years. He also served as a territorial senator and member of the Honolulu City Council. Early years Frank Francis Fasi was born on 27 August 1920 in Hartford, Connecticut, to Sicilian immigrants Carmelo and Josephine Lupo Fasi. Carmelo owned an ice business, and Frank began working for his father at age 11. He finished 7th out of class of 476 in high school, and graduated from Trinity College where he had been a history major on an academic scholarship. Fasi tried to join the United States Marine Corps after graduation from Trinity. The Marines turned him down because of his color blindness. Ben Cayetano
Benjamin Jerome Cayetano (born November 14, 1939) is an American politician and author who served as the fifth governor of the State of Hawaii from 1994 to 2002. He is the first Filipino American to serve as a state governor in the United States. Early years Born in Honolulu, Hawaii, Cayetano was estranged from his mother at a young age. Cayetano was raised by his father in Kalihi, an ethnic Filipino neighborhood west of downtown Honolulu. He would grow up as a latchkey child. In Kalihi, he attended Wallace Rider Farrington High School, a public school aptly known locally as "Home of the Governors" as its buildings were named after several early Hawaii statesmen. Hawaii House Of Representatives
The Hawaii House of Representatives is the lower house of the Hawaii State Legislature. Pursuant to Article III, Section 3 of the Constitution of Hawaii, amended during the 1978 constitutional convention, the House of Representatives consists of 51 members representing an equal number of districts across the islands. It is led by the Speaker of the House elected from the membership of the House, with majority and minority leaders elected from their party's respective caucuses. The current Speaker of the House is Scott Saiki. Legislators are elected to two-year terms and are not subject to term limits.
