''Hot Pursuit'' is a 2015 American action comedy film produced by New Line Cinema, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures, and Pacific Standard and distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures. The film was directed by Anne Fletcher, from a screenplay written by David Feeney and John Quaintance, and stars Reese Witherspoon and Sofía Vergara. The story follows a police officer assigned to protect the widow of a drug boss from corrupt cops and criminals who want her dead as they race through Texas to avoid detection. ''Hot Pursuit'' was released on May 8, 2015. It received negative reviews from critics, and grossed $51.4 million worldwide against a budget of $35 million. "Riding shotgun" was a phrase used to describe the bodyguard who rides alongside a stagecoach driver, typically armed with a break-action shotgun, called a coach gun, to ward off bandits or hostile Native Americans.
