Henry Boyle, 1st Baron Carleton
Henry Boyle, 1st Baron Carleton, (12 July 1669 – 31 March 1725) was an Anglo-Irish Whig politician who sat in the Irish House of Commons from 1692 to 1695 and in the English and British House of Commons between 1689 and 1710. He served as Chancellor of the Exchequer and Secretary of State, and after he was raised to the peerage as Baron Carleton, served as Lord President of the council. Biography Boyle was the son of Charles Boyle, 3rd Viscount Dungarvan, and his first wife Lady Jane Seymour, daughter of William Seymour. He was educated at Westminster School and travelled abroad from 1685 to 1688, attending Padua University in 1685. He entered the army under the auspices of his uncle, the Tory politician Lord Rochester. However, Boyle himself became a Whig, and in 1688 deserted the army of James II in favour of the Prince of Orange. Henry Boyle, 1st Earl of Shannon, Privy Council of Ireland, PC (Ire) (1682 – 27 December 1764), was an Anglo-Irish politician who served as the speaker of the Irish House of Commons from 1733 to 1756. A prominent Member of parliament, parliamentarian who sat for almost fifty years in the Parliament of Ireland, Boyle frequently defended Irish interests against British Crown officials, eventually leading to a legal crisis which saw him step down as speaker in return for a peerage. Born in Castlemartyr, Kingdom of Ireland, Ireland to an Anglo-Irish family, Boyle was educated in Kingdom of England, England at Westminster School and the University of Oxford. In 1705, Boyle inherited the family estates in Ireland after his elder brother died. Henry Boyle, 3rd Earl of Shannon, KP, PC (Ire) (8 August 1771 – 22 April 1842), styled Viscount Boyle from 1764 until 1807, was an Anglo-Irish politician and peer who was one of the last surviving members of the Parliament of Ireland. He represented County Cork in the Parliament of the United Kingdom from 1801 to 1807. He then briefly served as Member of Parliament for Bandon in 1807, succeeding as Earl of Shannon later in the same year. He served as Custos rotulorum for County Cork from 1807 to his death. He was the first Lord Lieutenant of Cork from 1831 to his death. Family He was a son of Richard Boyle, 2nd Earl of Shannon, and Catherine Ponsonby. His sister Catherine Henrietta Boyle married Francis Bernard, 1st Earl of Bandon. Henry J. "Handsome Harry" Boyle (September 20, 1860 – May 25, 1932) was a professional baseball player. He was a pitcher over parts of 6 seasons (1884–1889) with the St. Louis Maroons and Indianapolis Hoosiers. He led the National League in ERA in 1886 while playing for the Maroons. For his career, he compiled an 89–111 record in 207 appearances, with a 3.06 ERA and 602 strikeouts. Henry Edmund Gaskin Boyle
Henry Edmund Gaskin Boyle OBE (2 April 1875 – 15 October 1941) was a pioneering anaesthetist best remembered for the development of early anaesthetic machines. Early life Born in Barbados, he was the only child of Henry Eudolphus Boyle, estate manager and his wife, Elizabeth, daughter of Benjamin Law Gaskin, a member of the House of Assembly. He moved to England in 1894 after schooling at Harrison College, Bridgetown. Professional life Boyle qualified MRCS LRCP in 1901 from St Bartholomew's Hospital, London. He worked as a junior anaesthetist at Barts and was appointed visiting consultant in 1903. During World War I he worked with the Royal Army Medical Corps in London, publishing over 3600 cases anaesthetised with nitrous oxide-oxygen-ether. His work was recognised with an OBE. Boyle promoted intratracheal insufflation techniques using nitrous oxide, oxygen and ether, replacing open-drop anaesthesia. Initially he used imported Gwathmey machines from the USA, but finding ...
