Hartshorne Woods Park
Hartshorne Woods Park (pronounced: hurt-shern) is a county park located in Northern Monmouth County, New Jersey, United States, in New Jersey's Raritan Bayshore, Bayshore Region. The park has of trails, several old military bunkers and a small beach with a fishing pier. It is roughly bordered to the north and west by Navesink Ave and New Jersey Route 36, Route 36. Its southern borders are Hartshorne Road and the Navesink River. Its eastern border is the Shrewsbury River, Upper Shrewsbury River. The Park is split into three sections from west to east: The Buttermilk Valley Section, the Monmouth Hills Section, and the Rocky Point Section. History The park is named after Richard Hartshorne (settler), Richard Hartshorne, who acquired the land from the Lenape for thirteen shillings after sailing to the Highlands, New Jersey, Highland in 1674. Raritan Bayshore
The Raritan Bayshore is a region in central sections in the state of New Jersey. It is the area around Raritan Bay from The Amboys to Sandy Hook, in Middlesex and Monmouth counties, including the towns of Perth Amboy, South Amboy, Sayreville, Old Bridge, Matawan, Aberdeen, Keyport, Union Beach, Hazlet, Keansburg, Middletown, Atlantic Highlands, and Highlands. It is the northernmost part of the Jersey Shore, located just south of New York City. At Keansburg is a traditional amusement park while at Sandy Hook are found ocean beaches. New Jersey Route 36
Route 36 is a state highway in Monmouth County, New Jersey, United States. The long route, shaped as a backwards C, begins at an intersection with the Garden State Parkway and Hope Road ( County Route 51, CR 51) on the border of Tinton Falls and Eatontown and runs east to Long Branch. From Long Branch, the route follows the Atlantic Ocean north to Sea Bright and turns west, running to the south of the Raritan Bay. Route 36 ends in Keyport at an interchange with the Garden State Parkway and Route 35. It varies in width from a six-lane divided highway to a two-lane undivided road. The route is signed east–west between Eatontown and Long Branch and north–south between Long Branch and Keyport. Navesink River
The Navesink River is an estuary in the eastern United States in Monmouth County, New Jersey. Approximately in length, it is surrounded by the communities of Middletown (including the namesake Navesink CDP), Red Bank, Fair Haven, and Rumson. Known officially as the North Shrewsbury River and upstream of Red Bank as the Swimming River, it is formed southwest of Red Bank by the confluence of the Swimming River with several smaller streams. It extends ENE along the north side of Red Bank, connecting to the Shrewsbury River estuary at Rumson, approximately south of the entrance of the Shrewsbury River into Sandy Hook Bay near Highlands. Shrewsbury River
The Shrewsbury River is a short stream and navigable estuary. The stream is approximately 8 mi (13 km) long and is located in Monmouth County in Central New Jersey. It extends east-northeast from its head of navigation at Oceanport to its confluence with the Navesink River estuary, then entering 1 mi (1.6 km) north in a narrow channel to Sandy Hook Bay at Highlands. The south shore runs about the entire length of the northern border of Long Branch. The estuary is protected from the open Atlantic Ocean on its eastern side by a long barrier peninsula that extends north to become Sandy Hook. Jersey Shore resort communities on the peninsula include Monmouth Beach and Sea Bright. Richard Hartshorne (settler)
Richard Hartshorne (; 1641 – May 22, 1722) was a Quaker settler and politician who was instrumental in the English settlement of the Navesink Highlands and Sandy Hook in New Jersey. Hartshorne, who farmed nearly 2,400 acres in modern day Middletown and Atlantic Highlands, would also serve in the provincial assembly. Hartshorne's decadents would remain influential in the region, and Hartshorne Woods Park, situated on land acquired by Hartshorne, is named after him. Life and career Hartshorne was born in Hathern, Leicestershire in 1641 to William Hugh Hartshorne and Katherine Roobottom. Hartshorne emigrated to Colony of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations in c. 1669, and married Margaret Carr in 1670. Hartshorne hosted Quaker religious leader George Fox in while in Rhode Island.
