H. I. Biegeleisen
Hyman Irving Biegeleisen (June 4, 1904 New York City – May 3, 1991, died at his home in Boca Raton, Florida) was an American physician and pioneer of phlebology. In 1964, he founded the Phlebology Society of America (now incorporated into the American College of Phlebology). He was one of the first medical doctors in the United States to use injection as a method of treating varicose veins, and coined the term '' sclerotherapy'' to describe the treatment. University Hospital of Brooklyn at Long Island College Hospital (or LICH) was a 506-bed teaching hospital located in the Brooklyn Heights and Cobble Hill neighborhoods of Brooklyn, New York. The hospital was founded in 1858 as Long Island College Hospital and following years-long attempts to save it through mergers and property development, it ceased operations on August 30, 2014. History Long Island College Hospital introduced the practice of bedside teaching in 1860, and it later became the first U.S. hospital to use stethoscopes and anesthesia. In 1873 it introduced the first emergency ambulance service in Brooklyn. Its collegiate division would later form the Downstate Medical Center, an academic unit of the State University of New York in 1948. SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University (Downstate) is a public medical school and hospital in Brooklyn, New York. It is the southernmost member of the State University of New York (SUNY) system and the only academic medical center for health education, research, and patient care serving Brooklyn's 2.5 million residents. Stuyvesant High School (pronounced ), commonly referred to among its students as Stuy (pronounced ), is a State school, public university-preparatory school, college-preparatory, Specialized high schools in New York City, specialized high school in New York City, United States. Operated by the New York City Department of Education, these specialized schools offer Tuition payments, tuition-free accelerated academics to city residents. Stuyvesant was established as an all-boys school in the East Village, Manhattan, East Village of Manhattan in 1904.
