Governing Bodies Association
The Association of Governing Bodies of Independent Schools (AGBIS) is the supporting and advisory organisation for governing bodies of independent schools in the UK, and is a member of the Independent Schools Council. History The Association of Governing Bodies of Public Schools, at that time boys' schools was founded in 1940. The Governing Bodies of Girls' Schools Association was formed in 1942 to represent independent girls' schools. The former association became the Governing Bodies Association in 1944 and represented both independent boys' and co-educational schools. The two associations merged in June 2002. Structure The association is based in Welwyn, England. The general secretary is Richard Harman. Independent Schools
An independent school is independent in its finances and governance. The Independent Schools Council (ISC) is a non-profit lobby group that represents over 1,300 schools in the United Kingdom's independent education sector. The organisation comprises seven independent school associations and promotes the business interests of its independent school members in the political arena, which includes the Department for Education and has been described as the "sleepless champion of the sector." The Headmasters' and Headmistresses' Conference (HMC) is an association of the head teachers of 361 independent schools (both boarding schools and day schools), some traditionally described as public schools. 298 Members are based in the United Kingdom, Crown dependencies and the Republic of Ireland. Girls' Schools Association
The Girls' Schools Association (GSA) is a professional association of the heads of independent girls' schools. It is a constituent member of the Independent Schools Council. History The GSA can trace its history back to the Association of Headmistresses which was founded in 1874 by Dorothea Beale and Frances Buss. The aim was to agree which issues need challenging and which could be ignored. Buss served as the founding president. Enid Essame of Queenswood School was an honorary secretary before she became president in 1960. She was succeeded by Diana Reader Harris in 1964. She served until 1966 organising a considered response to the influential Plowden Report. The Independent Association of Prep Schools (IAPS, formerly Independent Association of Preparatory Schools) is a schools association, representing around 670 preparatory schools. The majority of IAPS' schools are in the UK, with other locations including Africa, the Middle East, Singapore, and the USA. IAPS is a part of the Independent Schools Council. History IAPS was founded in 1892, as the Incorporated Association of Preparatory Schools. In 1981 IAPS merged with the Association of Headmistresses of Preparatory Schools, and ten years later moved its headquarters from Kensington to its current offices in Leamington Spa.
