George Stephens (playwright)
George Stephens (1800–1851) was an English author and dramatist. He enjoyed little apparent success, but one of his dramas played a part in the campaign of the Syncretic Society to lift licensing restrictions in London, and have more serious and new drama performed. Life Stephens was born at Chelsea, London on 8 March 1800; much of his life remains obscure. In later life he suffered reverses of fortune. He died at Pratt Terrace, Camden Town, London, on 15 October 1851. His widow Ellen died on 11 August 1866, aged 56. They had a son and daughter. Works Three works published under the pseudonym of St. John Dorset have been thought early productions by Stephens. At least two of them, ''The Vampire: a tragedy'', 1821, and ''Montezuma: a tragedy'', 1822, have also been taken to have been written by Hugo John Belfour; and the third, a volume of poems, to be a joint production of Belfour and Stephens. George Stephens (philologist)
George Stephens (13 December 1813 – 9 August 1895) was an English archeologist and philologist, who worked in Scandinavia, especially on interpreting runic inscriptions. Born at Liverpool, Stephens studied at University College London. In 1834, he married Mary Bennett and moved to Sweden, studying Scandinavian medieval literature and folklore. His collection of fairy tales together with Gunnar Olof Hyltén-Cavallius was often reprinted. Stephens moved to Denmark, became a lecturer in English at Copenhagen University in 1851, and a professor in 1855. He published regularly in ''The Gentleman's Magazine''. In 1860, he published the first edition of the Waldere fragments. In 1877, Uppsala University made him doctor honoris causa. His brother was the Methodist minister Joseph Rayner Stephens. Frank Stephens (sculptor)
George Francis Stephens (1859–1935), known as Frank Stephens, was an American sculptor, political activist and co-founder of a utopian single-tax community in Arden, Delaware. Early life, education and family Stephens was born December 28, 1859, in Rahway, New Jersey, to Henry Louis Stephens and Charlotte Ann Wevil. He briefly attended Rutgers College in New Brunswick, New Jersey, and entered the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (PAFA) in 1875, where he studied under Thomas Eakins at various times between 1879 and 1885. He served as Eakins' teaching assistant beginning in 1880, and married Eakins' sister Caroline "Caddie" Eakins on June 14, 1884. They had three children, Margaret, Donald, and Roger. Caroline died after giving birth in 1889. Stephens' second marriage was to Elenor Getty on November 29, 1905; they had 10 children. George Erwin Gullett Stephens (April 8, 1873 – April 1, 1946) was a college football player. He caught the first forward pass in the history of the sport. He was later a journalist who also sold insurance and real estate. George Stephens (cricketer)
George William Stephens (26 April 1889 – 17 March 1950) was an English amateur cricketer who played first-class cricket for Warwickshire from 1907 to 1925. A middle-order batsman, Stephens also acted as county captain in several matches from 1912 to 1924, and was the official captain in 1919, when Warwickshire won one match and finished last. He made only 275 runs in the season at an average of 14.47. He was a more successful batsman in 1920 when he made his first century and scored 612 runs at 43.71. His highest score was 143, made in 120 minutes, against Gloucestershire in 1923. In 1925 against Derbyshire he shared a ninth-wicket partnership of 154 with Alfred Croom which remained the county record until 2009. Warwickshire had been 154 for 8; Stephens scored 121 in 120 minutes. His twin brother, Frank, also played for Warwickshire.
