Garry Hill (baseball)
Garry Alton Hill (November 3, 1946 – September 20, 2017) was a Major League Baseball pitcher. He attended Garinger High School in Charlotte, North Carolina, and played college baseball for the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. After his sophomore year he was drafted in the first round (18th overall) of the 1967 Major League Baseball June secondary draft by the Atlanta Braves. He was starting pitcher for one home game with the Atlanta Braves on June 12, 1969, at Atlanta Stadium against pitcher Dick Selma, striking out two, and one walk. He also gave up four earned runs on six hits, one was a home run to Al Spangler in the 2nd inning. In baseball, the pitcher is the player who throws ("pitches") the baseball from the pitcher's mound toward the catcher to begin each play, with the goal of retiring a batter, who attempts to either make contact with the pitched ball or draw a walk. In the numbering system used to record defensive plays, the pitcher is assigned the number 1. Home Run
In baseball, a home run (abbreviated HR) is scored when the ball is hit in such a way that the batter is able to circle the bases and reach home plate safely in one play without any errors being committed by the defensive team. A home run is usually achieved by hitting the ball over the outfield fence between the foul poles (or hitting either foul pole) without the ball touching the field. Far less common is the "inside-the-park" home run where the batter reaches home safely while the baseball is in play on the field. Earned Run Average
In baseball statistics, earned run average (ERA) is the average of earned runs allowed by a pitcher per nine innings pitched (i.e. the traditional length of a game). It is determined by dividing the number of earned runs allowed by the number of innings pitched and multiplying by nine. Thus, a lower ERA is better. Runs resulting from passed balls or defensive errors (including pitchers' defensive errors) are recorded as unearned runs and omitted from ERA calculations.
