Gallagher And Shean
Gallagher & Shean was a highly successful musical comedy double act in vaudeville and on Broadway in the 1910s and 1920s, consisting of Ed Gallagher (1873–1929) and Al Shean (1868–1949); Shean was the maternal uncle of the Marx Brothers. Career Both comedians were relatively obscure vaudeville performers until they teamed up in 1910. Gallagher and Shean first joined forces during the tour of ''The Rose Maid'' in 1912, but they quarreled and split up two years later, in 1914. They next appeared together in 1920, to star in the Shubert Brothers' production of the highly successful ''Cinderella on Broadway'', through the efforts of Shean's sister, Minnie Marx (mother of the Marx Brothers). Ed Gallagher (actor)
Edward Francis Gallagher (1873 – March 28, 1929) was a vaudeville actor and half of the act Gallagher and Shean. Their story was told in an animated movie ''Mr. Gallagher and Mr. Shean'' (1931) by Max Fleischer and Dave Fleischer, who also created Koko the Clown and Betty Boop. Gallagher and Shean also reportedly made an early sound film at the Theodore Case studio in Auburn, New York, in 1925. Biography Gallagher was born in 1873 in San Francisco, California. The Happiness Boys
''The Happiness Boys'' was a popular radio program of the early 1920s. It featured the vocal duo of tenor Billy Jones (1889-1940) and bass/baritone Ernie Hare (1883-1939), who sang novelty songs. Career Jones and Hare were already established as soloists on phonograph records. One of Jones's better solos was "Mary Lou", while Hare scored with the Yuletide novelty "Santa Claus Hides in the Phonograph". In 1920 recording executive Gus Haenschen had them sing an accompaniment on a Brunswick recording. They went on to do numerous recordings for Brunswick Records, Edison, and other companies. Similarities between the two singers were often noted: same height, same weight, birthdays a few days apart. Dirty Duck (comix Character)
Dirty Duck is a fictional character created by underground comix artist Bobby London. The style of the strip is an homage to George Herriman's Krazy Kat. The character is not related to the 1975 film ''Down and Dirty Duck''. While promoted under the abbreviated title ''Dirty Duck'', the film has no connection to London's character or comics. Publication history London originally created the Dirty Duck character in 1970 to appear in an unsigned "basement" strip that would run underneath Dan O'Neill's syndicated ''Odd Bodkins'' strip. The cartoon strips planned to run underneath O'Neill's "Odd Bodkins" never saw print. The first person who succeeded in helping the strip see print was Gilbert Shelton, who ran it under Fat Freddy's Cat in the ''Los Angeles Free Press'' in early spring of 1971. His style evokes the work of early American cartoonists like George Herriman and Elzie Crisler Segar. John Herndon Mercer (November 18, 1909 – June 25, 1976) was an American lyricist, songwriter, and singer, as well as a record label executive who co-founded Capitol Records with music industry businessmen Buddy DeSylva and Glenn E. Wallichs. ''The Cabaret Girl'' is a musical comedy in three acts with music by Jerome Kern and book and lyrics by George Grossmith, Jr. and P. G. Wodehouse. It was produced by Grossmith and J. A. E. Malone at the Winter Garden Theatre in London's West End in September 1922 and featured Dorothy Dickson, Grossmith, Geoffrey Gwyther, and Norman Griffin (later replaced by Leslie Henson) in the leading roles. The first performance was originally scheduled for Thursday, 14 September 1922, with Henson in a leading role, but he fell ill on the morning of the scheduled opening, which was delayed to allow Griffin to prepare for the part. The show finally opened the following Tuesday, 19 September. According to the reviewer in '' The Times'', "Last night the piece received the warmest of receptions and thoroughly deserved it." Banner Records was an American record company and label in the 1920s and 1930s. It was created primarily for the S.S. Kresge Company, though it was employed as a budget label in other discount stores. History Banner was formed in January 1922 as the flagship label of the Plaza Music Company of New York City. Plaza Music produced several cheap labels targeted at discount houses and hired bandleader Adrian Schubert as musical director.
