The Guild of Young Freemen of the City of London is a membership organisation that connects young individuals associated with the traditions of the Freedom of the City in the City of London. Founded in 1976 as the Society of Young Freemen of the City of London during the Lord Mayoralty of Sir Robin Gillett Bt, the Guild was founded to provide a platform for young professionals to engage with the civic and historical traditions of the City. Over time, it has developed into a forum that fosters engagement with London’s heritage while supporting professional and community activities. Freedom Of The City Of London
The Freedom of the City of London started around 1237 as the status of a 'free man' or 'citizen', protected by the charter of the City of London and not under the jurisdiction of a feudal lord. In the Middle Ages, this developed into a freedom or right to trade, becoming closely linked to the medieval guilds, the livery companies. In 1835, eligibility for the freedom of the City was extended to anyone who lived in, worked in or had a strong connection to the City. The freedom that citizens enjoy has long associations with privileges in the governance of the City. Whilst no longer carrying many substantive rights and largely existing as a tradition, the freedom is a pre-requisite for standing for election to the Common Council and Court of Aldermen of the City of London. Hugh Bidwell
Sir Hugh Charles Philip Bidwell (1 November 1934 – 7 December 2013) was a British businessman and the 662nd Lord Mayor of London in 1989–90. Prior to his election as mayor Bidwell was an alderman of the Billingsgate ward from 1979 to 1996, and a sheriff of the City of London in 1986. Bidwell was appointed a Knight Grand Cross of the Order of the British Empire (GBE) on his election as mayor. Bidwell was born in 1934, the son of a wine importer, and was schooled at Stonyhurst. Undergoing National Service in the East Surrey Regiment in 1953, he served in Nyasaland, Kenya with the 1st Btn King's African Rifles. Bidwell began working in the food industry with the breakfast cereal maker Viota, and became a director of Viota in 1962. Ronald Gardner-Thorpe
Colonel Sir Ronald Laurence Gardner-Thorpe (13 May 1917 – 11 December 1991) was a British company director and Liberal Party politician who also became the 653rd Lord Mayor of London in 1980. Background Gardner-Thorpe was the son of Joseph Gardner and Hannah Coulthurst Thorpe. He was educated at St John's College, Portsmouth. In 1938 he married Hazel Mary Dees. They had one son. Sir Lindsay Roberts Ring (1 May 1914 – 10 August 1997) was a British businessman who took back control of the catering firm Ring and Brymer (Birch's), which had previously been owned by his family. After selling the business to Forte Holdings, he devoted himself to the activities of the City of London Corporation. After serving as councilman, Alderman and Sheriff of London he became Lord Mayor of London from 1975 to 1976.
