Great Northern Route
The Great Northern route, formerly known as Great Northern Electrics, is the route consisting of services on the southern end of the East Coast Main Line, which is the main railway link between the cities of London and Edinburgh, and its associated branches, including the Cambridge line, Fen line, Hertford loop line, and Northern City Line. The route is currently operated by Great Northern, which is one brand under the umbrella of Govia Thameslink Railway. Services originating at London King's Cross operate to Peterborough, Letchworth, Cambridge, Ely, and Kings Lynn, whereas services originating at Moorgate operate to Welwyn, Hertford North, Gordon Hill, and Stevenage. British Rail Class 717
The British Rail Class 717 ''Desiro City'' is an electric multiple unit passenger train built by Siemens Mobility, currently operated by Govia Thameslink Railway on its Thameslink and Great Northern, Great Northern Hertford Loop and Welwyn stopping routes. Built to replace British Rail Class 313, Class 313 trains on services into Moorgate station, Moorgate, a total of 25 six-car units began entering regular service from March 2019. Thameslink Programme
The Thameslink Programme, originally Thameslink 2000, was a £6billion project in south-east England to upgrade and expand the Thameslink rail network to provide new and longer trains between a wider range of stations to the north and to the south of London. The development facilitated new cross-London journeys, which means that passengers no longer have to change trains in London. Work included platform lengthening, station remodelling, new railway infrastructure, and British Rail Class 700, new rolling stock. The project was originally proposed in 1991 following the successful introduction of the initial Thameslink service in 1988. After many delays, planning permission was granted in 2006 and funding was approved in October 2007.
