Gilbert Galvan
Gilbert William Galvan Jr. (born 1957) is an American bank robber. Having spent many of his adult years in prison, Galvan fled to Canada where he assumed the name Robert Lee Whiteman and began a three-year spree robbing banks and jewelry stores. The media dubbed him the Flying Bandit and the Phantom Bandit. Galvan's exploits were the subject of a 1996 true crime book, The Flying Bandit, written by Robert Knuckle and Ed Arnold, which was adapted into the 2022 film ''Bandit (film), Bandit''. Criminal career In the United States, Galvan had embezzled from Western Union. In 1984, he escaped from prison in St. Joseph County, Michigan, and fled to Pembroke, Ontario, where he took a new name, Robert Lee Whiteman, and claimed to be a computer salesman. Robert Knuckle
Robert Gordon Knuckle (February 15, 1935 – March 3, 2019) was a best-selling Canadian author, actor and playwright. He was a member of the Playwrights Guild of Canada. Knuckle was an educator for thirty-five years before he started writing full-time in 1992. He was an ACTRA award-winning author of ten books and two booklets. Most of his books are about true crime and/or tales of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police who invested him as an honorary life member of their veterans association. He has also written for the stage, television, radio, and cinema. Nine of his thirteen-stage plays have been produced at major venues in Canada, USA, and in Europe, including the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. ''Bandit'' is a 2022 Canadian biographical crime film directed by Allan Ungar and starring Josh Duhamel, Elisha Cuthbert, Nestor Carbonell and Mel Gibson. The film is based on the true life story of Gilbert Galvan Jr (also known as ''The Flying Bandit''), who still holds a record for the most consecutive robberies in Canadian history. The screenplay by Kraig Wenman is largely based on interviews and accounts featured in the 1996 true crime book ''The Flying Bandit'' by Robert Knuckle with Ed Arnold. Pembroke, Ontario
Pembroke is a city in the Canadian province of Ontario at the confluence of the Muskrat River and the Ottawa River in the Ottawa Valley. Pembroke is the location of the administrative headquarters of Renfrew County, though the city itself is politically independent. It is northwest of Ottawa.
