Gala Flagello
Gala Flagello (born 1994), is an American composer, educator, and nonprofit director. Her contemporary classical music focuses on collaborations with ensembles, performers, and organizations, with music written for orchestra, wind ensemble, and choir to chamber music and solos for nearly every instrument. Flagello also teaches at the University of Michigan and is the Festival Director and co-founder of the contemporary music festival, Connecticut Summerfest. Gala Flagello was born in Westwood, New Jersey, and began her musical training on French horn. She attended the Hartt School, where she received a Bachelor of Music in Composition. Flagello continued her studies at the University of Michigan, where she earned both a Master of Music and Doctor of Musical Arts in Composition. William D. Revelli (February 12, 1902 – July 16, 1994) was an American music educator and conductor best known for his association with the University of Michigan, where he directed the university's bands including the Michigan Marching Band 1935 to 1971. During his 36 years as director, the Michigan Marching Band won international acclaim for its musical precision. Revelli is also credited with innovations that moved college marching bands across the country away from rigid military formations. Among other things, Revelli's Michigan Marching Band was the first to synchronize music and movement and the first to use an announcer. Women Composers
Women composers of Western classical music are disproportionately absent from the music textbooks and concert programs that constitute the patriarchical Western canon, even though many women have composed music. The reasons for women's absence are various. The musicologist Marcia Citron writing in 1990 noted that many works of musical history and anthologies of music had very few, or sometimes no, references to and examples of music written by women. Among the reasons for historical under-representation of women composers Citron has adduced problems of access to musical education and to the male hierarchy of the musical establishment (performers, conductors, impresarios etc.); condescending attitudes of male reviewers, and their association of women composers with "salon music" rather than music of the concert platform; and denial of female creativity in the arts by philosophers such as Jean-Jacques Rousseau and Immanuel Kant. Nicolas Flagello
Nicolas Oreste Flagello (March 15, 1928 – March 16, 1994) was an American composer and conductor of classical music. He was one of the last American composers to develop a distinctive mode of expression based wholly on the principles and techniques of late romanticism. Life Flagello was born in New York City, into a musical family. (His brother Ezio Flagello was a bass who sang at the Metropolitan Opera). He began studying composition with Vittorio Giannini, with whom he continued to study at the Manhattan School of Music. Upon graduating (M.M., 1950) he joined the faculty, where he remained for more than 25 years. In 1955, he won a Fulbright Fellowship to study at the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome where he worked under Ildebrando Pizzetti. As a composer, Flagello held firmly to a belief in music as a personal medium for emotional and spiritual expression. Sousa/Ostwald Award
The Sousa/Ostwald Award is an annual award given by the American Bandmasters Association for a composition for concert band A concert band, also called a wind band, wind ensemble, wind symphony, wind orchestra, symphonic band, the symphonic winds, or symphonic wind ensemble, is a performing ensemble consisting of members of the woodwind instrument, woodwind, brass .... It was first awarded in 1956, after band uniform suppliers Ernest and Adolph Ostwald established the ABA/Ostwald Award for the best band composition written in the previous year. Previous rules allowed for compositions of grades 1-6, but the rules are undergoing a transition to focus on grades 1-4 (in 2011) and 5-6 (in 2012).
