Friends (1993 Film)
''Friends'' is a 1993 South African drama film directed by Elaine Proctor. It was entered into the 1993 Cannes Film Festival, where it won an award for Caméra d'Or Special Distinction. The film is set during apartheid in Johannesburg and follows three friends who each represent a different faction of South African society. Plot Three young women live together in apartheid-era Johannesburg, with each of them dealing with apartheid in different ways. Thoko, a Black woman, works as a schoolteacher and practices non-violent passive resistance. Aninka, an Afrikaner, is an archeologist who rejects her family’s pro-apartheid politics. Sophie, who is from a white British family, is a librarian but secretly belongs to an anti-apartheid terrorist organization. Sophie plants bombs in public places on behalf of the organization. Elaine Proctor
Elaine Proctor (born 1960) is a South African film director, screenwriter, novelist, and actress. Her film '' Friends'' was entered into the 1993 Cannes Film Festival, where it won the Caméra d'Or Special Distinction. Proctor attended the National Film and Television School, where she studied under director Mike Leigh. Her graduation film, ''On the Wire'', won the school's Sutherland Trophy. Proctor has also written two novels. Her second novel, ''Savage Hour'', was shortlisted for the 2015 Barry Ronge Fiction Prize. David James Stratton (born 10 September 1939) is an English-Australian award-winning film critic, as both a journalist and interviewer, film historian and lecturer and television personality and producer. Life and career Born in Trowbridge, Wiltshire, England, in 1939, Stratton was sent to Hampshire to see out the war years with his grandmother, an avid filmgoer, where he was taken to the local cinemas regularly and saw a diverse range of movies. He attended Chafyn Grove School from 1948 to 1953 as a boarder. He saw his first foreign film at Bath in 1955— Italian romantic comedy ''Bread, Love and Dreams''. That was soon followed by Akira Kurosawa's Japanese adventure drama classic ''Seven Samurai'' tracked down in Birmingham. At the age of 19, he founded the Melksham and District Film Society.
