French Cruiser Foch
''Foch'' was the third unit of the . She entered service in 1931 and spent the interwar period in the Mediterranean. September 1939 found her still in Toulon. She participated in the search for the German cruiser Admiral Graf Spee, ''Graf Spee'' in the Atlantic before returning to Toulon. The only time she fired her guns in anger was during the bombardment of Vado Ligure, Vado, Italy in mid-June 1940. She was at Toulon at the time of the Armistice of 22 June 1940, Franco-German Armistice in June 1940. She remained at Toulon until the French Fleet there was Scuttling of the French fleet at Toulon, scuttled in late November 1942. The Gourdou-Leseurre GL-812 HY was a 3-seat reconnaissance floatplane, built by Gourdou-Leseurre. Development The prototype, called L-2, was built in 1926-27. It has a steel tube fuselage, and rectangular wooden wing. The tail was two fins, one above and one below the fuselage. The entire plane was fabric covered, except the Gnome-Rhône 9A Jupiter engine, which was left uncowled. The prototype was flown to Copenhagen, and demonstrated there to several countries. Six prototype L-3s were constructed. They had a larger Jupiter, steel spars instead of wood, and stronger struts, allowing for shipboard catapult launching. The Baie de Douarnenez (; br, Bae Douarnenez) is a bay in Finistère, France, between the Crozon Peninsula to the north and the Cap Sizun to the south. It is a vast semi-circular basin over wide and from its entrance to the opposite shore. Although half closed off to the west by Cap de la Chèvre, it opens out again to a width of on the side of the Mer d'Iroise. To the south-east is the port of Douarnenez, which was the center of a large sardine industry in the early 20th century. The bay was named after it. The tripod mast is a type of mast used on warships from the Edwardian era onwards, replacing the pole mast. Tripod masts are distinctive using two large (usually cylindrical) support columns spread out at angles to brace another (usually vertical) column.
