Freddie James
Freddie James is a former American football coach. He played under Billy Nicks at Prairie View A&M in the late 1950s, before working in a steel plant for a couple of years, then as a physical therapist in Houston, Texas. His former coach Nicks later recommended him for high school football coaching. In 1982 James became head coach at David W. Carter High School in Dallas, Texas. In his first year, Carter reached the 5A state semifinals. In 1988, Carter won the title after one of the most dominant seasons in Texas high school football, but the title was later forfeited because of eligibility infringements. After a ban from the state playoffs in 1989, because James had played an ineligible player, Carter reached the state semis again in 1990. He retired after the 1995 season, having guided the Carter Cowboys to a 123-22-3 record in his 14 seasons, and having turned the program into a nationally recognized power. American football (referred to simply as football in the United States and Canada), also known as gridiron, is a team sport played by two teams of eleven players on a rectangular field with goalposts at each end. The offense, the team with possession of the oval-shaped football, attempts to advance down the field by running with the ball or passing it, while the defense, the team without possession of the ball, aims to stop the offense's advance and to take control of the ball for themselves. ''Carter High'' is a 2015 American sports film directed and written by Arthur Muhammad. The film is centered on the 1988 Cowboys of David W. Carter High School in Dallas, a team that fought through racial prejudice and a grades controversy to claim the 5A state title, only to be rocked when six of their players were involved in an armed robbery and the grades issue stripped them of their title. Billy Nicks
William James Nicks (August 2, 1905 – November 2, 1999) was an American college football player and coach. He coached at Historically Black colleges and universities, historically black colleges in the Southern United States from 1930 to 1965. Nicks served as the head football coach at Morris Brown College in Georgia (1930–1935, 1937–1939, 1941–1942) and at Prairie View A&M University in Texas (1945–1947, 1952–1965). He was the NAIA Football Coach of the Year Award, NAIA Football Coach of the Year in 1963 and his teams were declared the Black college football national championship, black college football national champions six times. Nicks was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame as a coach in 1999.
