Jean-Baptiste-Louis Franquelin
Jean-Baptiste-Louis Franquelin (1650-c.1712) was a French trader who was appointed in the early 1670s as the first cartographer in ''Nouvelle France'' (Canada) by the colony's governor. He was appointed in 1688 as royal hydrographer by Louis XIV. Franquelin was born in the commune of Pallauau-sur-Indre in central France. He migrated to New France in 1671 where he was soon appointed as the colony's cartographer. He documented a decade of Louis Jolliet and René-Robert Cavelier de La Salle's explorations in North America. He also completed other projects for the Crown and served the king's military engineer. After returning to France in 1692, he never lived in Canada again. Franquelin, Quebec
Franquelin is a municipality in Quebec, Canada, in the administrative region of Côte-Nord in RCM Manicouagan. Its population is 285 people over 430 square kilometres. Franquelin was founded at the foot of Massifs rocks of the Laurentians where impressive cliffs plunge to the Gulf of Saint Lawrence. The name of the municipality was given in honour of Jean-Baptiste-Louis Franquelin, the first official cartographer of New France. He drew the map of the Saint Lawrence River in 1685. Franquelin came into existence in 1911 thanks to the forest industry. The lumber would be transported to the rivers by horses. From there, it was shipped to paper mills in Thorold, Ontario, and then to Baie-Comeau starting in 1937. The Ontario Paper Company, owned by Colonel Robert R. McCormick, which later became the Quebec North Shore Paper Co., needed paper to supply the Chicago Tribune and the New York Daily News, which were also owned by McCormick. The rivière Franquelin is located in the unorganized territory of Rivière-aux-Outardes and the municipality of Franquelin, in the Manicouagan Regional County Municipality, in the administrative region of Côte-Nord, in the province of Quebec, in Canada. The Franqueline river valley is served by the route 138 which passes at its mouth. The rest of the valley is served by various forest roads for the needs of forestry and recreational tourism activities. The surface of the Franquelin River is usually frozen from the beginning of November to the end of April, except the rapids areas; however, safe circulation on the ice is generally from late November to early April. Lake Franquelin is a freshwater body of the watershed of Franquelin River, in the unorganized territory of Rivière-aux-Outardes, in the Manicouagan, in the administrative region of Côte-Nord, in the province of Quebec, in Canada. The surroundings of Lac Franquelin are served by a few forest roads which indirectly connect south to the route 138. Forestry is the main economic activity around the lake.
