Francis Holburne
Admiral Sir Francis Holburne (1704 – 15 July 1771) was a Royal Navy officer and politician. He served as commodore and commander-in-chief at the Leeward Islands during the War of the Austrian Succession and then took part in an operation to capture Louisbourg as part of the Louisbourg Expedition during the Seven Years' War. He went on to be Port Admiral at Portsmouth and then Senior Naval Lord. In retirement he became Governor of Greenwich Hospital. He also served as a Member of Parliament. Origins He was born in 1704 the second son of Sir James Holburn, 1st Baronet of Menstrie, Clackmannan, Scotland, by his wife Jean Spittal, a daughter of Alexander Spittal of Leuchat. He was the brother to James Holburne, 2nd Baronet and William Holburne, who both served in the Navy. Sir Francis Holburn, 4th Baronet (1752–1820), was an English baronet and son of Admiral Francis Holburne. Francis Holburne inherited the family title from his cousin Sir Alexander Holburn, 3rd Baronet, in 1772. In 1786 he went on to marry Alicia Brayne (1766-1829) and they lived in Lower Sketty near Swansea. They moved to Bath in 1801 in Lansdown Crescent, where their family connection to the Lascelles would have been socially important. The Fortress of Louisbourg (french: Forteresse de Louisbourg) is a National Historic Site and the location of a one-quarter partial reconstruction of an 18th-century French fortress at Louisbourg on Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia. Its two sieges, especially that of 1758, were turning points in the Anglo-French struggle for what today is Canada. The original settlement was made in 1713, and initially called Havre à l'Anglois. Subsequently, the fishing port grew to become a major commercial port and a strongly defended fortress. The fortifications eventually surrounded the town. The walls were constructed mainly between 1720 and 1740. In 1603 all English warships with a compliment of fewer than 160 men were known as 'small ships'. Sixth-rate
In the rating system of the Royal Navy used to categorise sailing warships, a sixth-rate was the designation for small warships mounting between 20 and 28 carriage-mounted guns on a single deck, sometimes with smaller guns on the upper works and sometimes without. It thus encompassed ships with up to 30 guns in all. In the first half of the 18th century the main battery guns were 6-pounders, but by mid-century these were supplanted by 9-pounders. 28-gun sixth rates were classed as frigates, those smaller as 'post ships', indicating that they were still commanded by a full ('post') captain, as opposed to sloops of 18 guns and less under commanders. William Holburne (died 1 April 1760) (also known as William Holborne and William Holburn) was an officer of the Royal Navy. He entered the navy, and may have served aboard the 74-gun third rate , during her time with Admiral Sir Edward Hawke's fleet at the Battle of Cape Finisterre.
