The mixed pairs was one of four events in figure skating at the 1908 Summer Olympics. Each nation could enter up to 3 pairs (6 skaters).Official Report, p. 39. Twelve years later, silver medalist Phyllis Johnson would capture a bronze medal with a new partner at the 1920 Olympics. Competition format Each skater performed a five-minute free skate. Scores from 0 to 6 were given for each figure for both (a) content (difficulty and variety) and (b) performance. The total possible score was therefore 12. Each judge would then arrange the pairs in order of total score by that judge; these ordinal rankings were used to provide final placement for the pairs, using a "majority rule"--if a majority of the judges ranked a pair first, the pair won. Heinrich Burger
Heinrich Burger (31 May 1881 – 27 April 1942) was a German figure skater. He competed in both singles and pairs events. He was Olympic champion and two-time World champion together with Anna Hübler. Burger and Hübler were the first world champions and the first Olympic champions in pairs figure skating. They never became European champions, because the European championships did not include a pairs competition until 1930. They skated for the club Müchener EV (Munich EV). Four figure skating events were contested at the 1908 Summer Olympics in London, but they were held in October 1908, six months after most of the other Olympic events at the 1908 Games. The figure skating competition took place at the Prince's Skating Club, in the district of Knightsbridge. It was the first time that a winter sport had ever been included in the Olympic Games, sixteen years before the first Winter Olympics in Chamonix. The number of competitors was very low, with two events having only three entrants, guaranteeing a medal for participation. Horatio Torromé
Horatio Tertuliano Torromé, also credited as Henri Torromé (1861 – 16 September 1920), was a British figure skater who also competed for Argentina. Torromé was born in Rio de Janeiro to an Argentine father and a Brazilian mother, and not long after his birth the family emigrated to London, England, this is where Torromé took up ice skating at his local club which was the Prince's Skating Club in Knightsbridge, London. Torromé competed at the 1902 World Figure Skating Championships in London and he finished in fourth place out of four starters, in 1905 and 1906 he came first at the British Figure Skating Championships. Although Torromé qualified to represent Great Britain at the 1908 Summer Olympics, but he opted to compete for his fathers home country and so becoming the only representative for Argentina at the 1908 Summer Olympics held in London. Anna "Annie" Hübler (2 January 1885 – 5 July 1976) was a German pair skater, born in Munich. She was an Olympic champion and two-time World champion with skating partner Heinrich Burger. Hübler and Burger were the first World champions and the first Olympic champions in pairs figure skating. They never became European champions, because the European championships did not include a pairs competition until 1930. They skated for the club Münchener EV (Munich EV). Hübler was the first female German Olympic champion. (The first woman winning an Olympic medal for Germany was the single skater Elsa Rendschmidt. She won silver in 1908.)
