Faraday Society
The Faraday Society was a British society for the study of physical chemistry, founded in 1903 and named in honour of Michael Faraday. In 1980, it merged with several similar organisations, including the Chemical Society, the Royal Institute of Chemistry, and the Society for Analytical Chemistry to form the Royal Society of Chemistry which is both a learned society and a professional body. At that time, the Faraday Division became one of six units within the Royal Society of Chemistry. The Faraday Society published ''Faraday Transactions'' from 1905 to 1971, when the Royal Society of Chemistry took over the publication. Of particular note were the conferences called ''Faraday Discussions'', which were published under the same name. The publication includes the discussion of the paper as well as the paper itself. Physical Chemistry
Physical chemistry is the study of macroscopic and microscopic phenomena in chemical systems in terms of the principles, practices, and concepts of physics such as motion, energy, force, time, thermodynamics, quantum chemistry, statistical mechanics, analytical dynamics and chemical equilibria. Physical chemistry, in contrast to chemical physics, is predominantly (but not always) a supra-molecular science, as the majority of the principles on which it was founded relate to the bulk rather than the molecular or atomic structure alone (for example, chemical equilibrium and colloids). Robert Abbott Hadfield
Sir Robert Abbott Hadfield, 1st Baronet FRS (28 November 1858 in Sheffield – 30 September 1940 in Surrey) was an English metallurgist, noted for his 1882 discovery of manganese steel, one of the first steel alloys. He also invented silicon steel, initially for mechanical properties (patents in 1886) which have made the alloy a material of choice for springs and some fine blades, though it has also become important in electrical applications for its magnetic behaviour. Life Hadfield was born 28 November 1858 in Sheffield. Hadfield's father, also named Robert Hadfield, owned Hadfield's Steel Foundry in Sheffield and was one of the first manufacturers of steel castings. The younger Hadfield took over the business in 1888 and built the firm into one of the largest foundries in the world. Between 1898 and 1939 he lived at Parkhead House in Whirlow, Sheffield. John Lennard-Jones
Sir John Edward Lennard-Jones (27 October 1894 – 1 November 1954) was a British mathematician and professor of theoretical physics at the University of Bristol, and then of theoretical science at the University of Cambridge. He was an important pioneer in the development of modern computational chemistry and theoretical chemistry. Early life and education Lennard-Jones was born on 27 October 1894 at Leigh, Lancashire, the eldest son of Mary Ellen and Hugh Jones, an insurance agent. He was educated at Leigh Grammar School, going on to study at the University of Manchester, graduating in 1915 with a first-class honours degree in mathematics. Arthur John Allmand
Arthur John Allmand (7 January 1885 – 4 August 1951) was an English chemist, professor of King's College London. Allmand was born in 1885 at Wrexham, England, however he always said he was Welsh. His father was a flour miller called Frank Allmand. He studied at the University of Liverpool starting in 1902, and attained honours in 1905. In 1906 he undertook an MSc, and in 1910 a Doctor of Science. He then went to Karlsruhe and Dresden Germany from 1910 to 1912. From 1913 to 1919 he was an assistant lecturer at University of Liverpool. He was in Germany at the start of World War I in 1914, and had to escape the country via Poland, Russia and Sweden. During the war he had the job as Assistant Chemical Advisor, where he had to overcome chemical warfare. A Military Cross was awarded to him in 1916. Morris William Travers
Morris William Travers, FRS (24 January 1872 – 25 August 1961) was an English chemist who worked with Sir William Ramsay in the discovery of xenon, neon and krypton. His work on several of the rare gases earned him the name ''Rare gas Travers'' in scientific circles. He was the founding director of the Indian Institute of Science. Early life Travers was born in Kensington, London, the son of William Travers MD, FRCS (1838-1906), an early pioneer of aseptic surgical techniques. His mother was Anne Pocock. Travers went to school at Ramsgate, Woking and Blundell's School. Career He then went to University College, where he began to work with Sir William Ramsay. William Rintoul
William Rintoul OBE (1870 – 25 August 1936) was a British chemist and President of the Faraday Society between 1934 and 1936. Biography Rintoul was born in Glasgow and attended Anderson's College there. He then lectured and worked as an assistant in analytical chemistry at the college. In 1891, he moved to London to assume a position of chemist at a paint factory and in 1894 moved to the Royal Gunpowder Factory. There, he later became the chemist-in-charge of the nitroglycerine production and eventually the chief chemist. Together with his friend Robert Robertson, Rintoul invented a process and designed a plant for the recovery of acetone during the production of cordite. In 1909, the superintendent of the Gunpowder Factory, Sir Frederic Nathan, moved to the Nobel Enterprises, an explosives plant in Ardeer, Scotland founded in 1870 by Alfred Nobel. Nevil Vincent Sidgwick
Nevil Vincent Sidgwick FRS (8 May 1873 – 15 March 1952) was an English theoretical chemist who made significant contributions to the theory of valency and chemical bonding. Biography Sidgwick was born in Park Town, Oxford, the elder of two children of William Carr Sidgwick, lecturer at Oriel College, and Sarah Isabella (née Thompson), descended from a notable family; her uncle was Thomas Perronet Thompson. Sir Robert Ludwig Mond, FRS, FRSE (9 September 1867 – 22 October 1938) was a British chemist and archaeologist. Early life and education Mond was born at Farnworth, Widnes, Lancashire, the elder son of Ludwig Mond, a chemist and industrialist. Thomas Martin Lowry
Thomas Martin Lowry (; 26 October 1874 – 2 November 1936) was an English physical chemist who developed the Brønsted–Lowry acid–base theory simultaneously with and independently of Johannes Nicolaus Brønsted and was a founder-member and president (1928–1930) of the Faraday Society. Biography Lowry was born in Low Moor, Bradford, West Riding of Yorkshire, England, in a Cornish family. He was the second son of the Reverend E. P.
