Furfurylated Wood
Furfurylated wood is the end product of treating wood with furfuryl alcohol. This chemical process is also called ''furfurylation''. Furfurylation is a commercially used wood modification process to enhance the physical, mechanical and biological properties of wood. In this process -which is based on principles of wood science- the cell walls of the wood swell with furfuryl alcohol, which polymerizes within the cell walls. This treatment reduces the water absorption capacity of the wood, thus minimizing its tendency to deform with changes in moisture. The hardness and rot resistance of the modified wood are also improved compared to natural, untreated wood. The furfuryl alcohol used is obtained through the hydrogenation of furfural from biological agriwaste residues, such as husks and bagasse. Dick Sandberg
Dick Sandberg (Söderhamn, Sweden; born in May 8, 1967) is a Swedish mechanical engineer and wood scientist at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), who is an elected fellow (''FIAWS'') of the International Academy of Wood Science. He is currently the editor-in-chief at the journal Wood Material Science and Engineering, and the period 2013-2024, he was a faculty member and chair professor at the Luleå University of Technology. Career He got his PhD degree in mechanical engineering, with specialization in wood technology and processing from the KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm in 1998. Afterwards, he worked as a wood specialist and manager in several wood enterprises in Sweden, and later served as a professor in forest products at Linnaeus University in Växjö. Swans are birds of the family Anatidae within the genus ''Cygnus''. The swans' closest relatives include the geese and ducks. Swans are grouped with the closely related geese in the subfamily Anserinae where they form the tribe Cygnini. Sometimes, they are considered a distinct subfamily, Cygninae. The shipworms are marine bivalve molluscs in the family Teredinidae: a group of saltwater clams with long, soft, naked bodies. Surfactants are chemical compounds that decrease the surface tension between two liquids, between a gas and a liquid, or interfacial tension between a liquid and a solid. George Mantanis ('; born September 18, 1966) is a Greek wood scientist and professor at the University of Thessaly in Greece, who is an elected fellow (''FIAWS'') of the International Academy of Wood Science. Lignin is a class of complex organic polymers that form key structural materials in the support tissues of most plants. Lignins are particularly important in the formation of cell walls, especially in wood and bark, because they lend rigidity and do not rot easily. Furfuryl Alcohol
Furfuryl alcohol is an organic compound containing a furan substituted with a hydroxymethyl group. It is a colorless liquid, but aged samples appear amber. It possesses a faint odor of burning and a bitter taste. It is miscible with but unstable in water. It is soluble in common organic solvents. Synthesis Furfuryl alcohol is manufactured industrially by hydrogenation of furfural, which is itself typically produced from waste bio-mass such as corncobs or sugar cane bagasse.
