''Frequency'' is the tenth studio album by the British neo-prog band IQ (band), IQ, released in May 2009 by Inside Out Music. Recorded at Aubitt Studios in Southampton and Redbridge Studios in Bolton from June 2007 to February 2009, it was produced by guitarist Michael Holmes. It was the first and only album recorded with new group members, keyboardist Mark Westworth and drummer Andy Edwards, as well as the last with bass guitarist John Jowitt. Critical reception In a three-and-a-half-star review, Alex Henderson of AllMusic has referred to ''Frequency'' as "a very moody" but at the same time "also very accessible" album, concluding that despite substantial line-up changes, "it illustrates IQ's ability to continue providing memorable and very digestible progressive rock 28 years after the band's formation". IQ are a British neo-prog band founded by Mike Holmes and Martin Orford in 1981Official IQ site. Band formed in 1981. following the dissolution of their original band The Lens. Although the band have never enjoyed major commercial success and had several lineup changes, IQ have built up a loyal following over the years and are still active as of 2025, currently with the original recording line-up (with the exception of Orford). In 2021/22, IQ performed a series of concerts in the UK and Europe celebrating their 40th anniversary. Neo-progressive rock (commonly abbreviated neo-prog) is a subgenre of progressive rock that developed in the UK in the early 1980s. The genre's most popular band, Marillion, achieved mainstream success in the decade. Several bands from the genre have continued to record and tour. Characteristics Neo-prog is characterised by deeply emotional content, often delivered via dramatic lyrics and a generous use of imagery and theatricality on-stage. The music is mostly the product of careful composition, relying less heavily on improvised jamming. John Jowitt
John Jowitt is a British bass guitarist known for his work with several neo-prog bands such as Ark, IQ, Arena, Jadis and Frost*, as well as filling in for Trevor Bolder in Uriah Heep in 2013. He has been awarded the British Classic Rock Society's award for best bass player 17 times, each year between 1993 and 1998, and again between 2002 and 2011, but has now specifically asked to sponsor the award in 2013 and not be considered. Andy Edwards (born 1968) is a British drummer, multi-instrumentalist musician and music critic who is best known as former member of the progressive rock bands Frost* and IQ. Robert Plant's Priory of Brion Edwards first came to prominence as the drummer in Robert Plant's Priory of Brion. Formed in 1999, the band performed over one hundred concerts across Europe. With the dissolution of this band in late 2000, Edwards became the UK's master drum clinician for Tama drums, performing at many of the major drum festivals and contributing to articles for a variety of drums magazines including Rhythm Magazine, Modern Drummer and Ragazzi. In 2001 readers of Rhythm Magazine voted Edwards as one of the top ten drum clinicians in the UK.
