Franklin Buchanan (Tennessee Politician)
Franklin Buchanan (1812 – March 1851) was a farmer and politician in Tennessee. He served multiple terms in the Tennessee House of Representatives starting in 1837 including as Speaker of the Tennessee House of Representatives. Biography Buchanan was born 1812 in Giles County, Tennessee. From 1827, aged 15, until 1831 he worked in the counties office of the clerk. He married Adelaide Simonton in 1831 and became a farmer, and together they had 10 children including in 1837 James M. Buchanan a soldier, farmer and merchant in Mississippi. He was elected to serve in the Tennessee House of Representatives starting in 1837 in Tennessee's 22nd General Assembly, he represented Lawrence County in the house. He was elected again in August 1839, as a Whig, to represent Lawrence. He won again in 1841 for his third session. The Tennessee House of Representatives is the lower house of the Tennessee General Assembly, the state legislature of the U.S. state of Tennessee. Constitutional requirements According to the state constitution of 1870, this body is to consist of 99 members elected for two-year terms. William Hawkins Polk
William Hawkins Polk (May 24, 1815 – December 16, 1862) was an American politician and a member of the United States House of Representatives for Tennessee's 6th congressional district from 1851 to 1853. He was the younger brother of President James K. Polk. Prior to his election to Congress, he had been a member of the Tennessee House of Representatives (1841–1845), served as U.S. Minister to the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies (1845–1847), and fought as a Major (United States), major in the Mexican–American War. At the outbreak of the Civil War, Polk supported the Union.Makers of America', Vol. 1 (B.F. Johnson, 1915), p. 567. Lawrence County is a county located in the U.S. state of Tennessee. As of the 2020 census, the population was 44,159. Its county seat and largest city is Lawrenceburg. Lawrence County comprises the Lawrenceburg, TN Micropolitan Statistical Area, which is also included in the Nashville-Davidson- Murfreesboro, TN Combined Statistical Area. History Created by an act of the Tennessee General Assembly on October 21, 1817, Lawrence County was formed from lands previously part of Hickman and Giles counties. It was named in honor of Captain James Lawrence (1781–1813), who while commanding the USS ''Chesapeake'' in an 1813 battle with the Royal Navy frigate HMS ''Shannon'', issued his famous command: "Don't give up the ship!
