A fortified house or fortified mansion is a type of building which developed in Europe during the Middle Ages, generally with significant fortifications added. During the earlier Roman Empire, Roman period it was common for wealthy landowners to construct unfortified villa, villas on their lands. After the fall of Rome, increased social instability and military conflict necessitated more austere, defensible types of structures. United States In the United States, historically a fortified house was often called a Fortification, fort or Station (frontier defensive structure), station depending on the region. This was a building built for defense against primarily Indigenous peoples of the Americas, Indian attacks in frontier areas. While some fortified houses were sometimes used by militias, state and federal military units, their primary purpose was for private or civilian defense. Mormon Station State Historic Park
Mormon Station State Historic Park is a state park in downtown Genoa, Nevada, interpreting the site of the first permanent nonnative settlement in Nevada. Mormon Station was originally settled by Mormon pioneers and served as a respite for travelers on the Carson Route of the California Trail. The park offers artifacts and exhibits about the station's history housed in a replica of the 1851 trading post stockade which burned down in 1910. Preservation In June 1910, a large fire swept through Genoa, destroying a number of structures, including what remained of the Mormon Station trading post. Fort Depuy
Fort Depuy, sometimes referred to in contemporary documents as Depui's Fort, Dupui's Fort, and various other spellings, is a fortified homestead located in Shawnee on Delaware, a village in Smithfield Township. It was one of many forts in Colonial Pennsylvania built in 1755 and 1756 during the French and Indian War following a series of attacks on local communities by Native Americans in December 1755. The fort never saw military action and was garrisoned from early 1756 until February 1757. Heinrich Zeller House
Heinrich Zeller House, also known as Fort Zeller and Zeller's Fort, is a historic -story building that has served as a fort, block house and residence. The historic structure is located in Millcreek Township, Lebanon County, Pennsylvania. Description Zeller's Fort was built in 1745 in the Pennsylvania German Traditional architectural style. The Zeller family, neighbors and the Pennsylvania militia used the fort during the French and Indian War (1754-1763) as refuge and defense against Native American Indian raids. It was actually a fortified house that replaced an earlier log house that was originally built in 1723 near the same location. During the French and Indian War, Lebanon County was susceptible to Native American Indian attacks so many fortifications, forts and blockhouses were constructed in this area. Fort Swatara
Fort Swatara (various spellings, sometimes referred to as Smith's Fort) was a stockaded blockhouse built during the French and Indian War in what is now Lebanon County, Pennsylvania. Initially a farmstead surrounded by a stockade, provincial troops occupied it in January 1756. The fort safeguarded local farms, but a number of settlers were killed by small Native American war parties. The fort was abandoned in May 1758. Fort Bigham
Fort Bigham (sometimes referred to as Bigham's Fort; renamed Fort Bingham after 1760) was a privately built stockaded blockhouse fort constructed in 1754 near present-day Honey Grove in Tuscarora Township, Juniata County, Pennsylvania. It was built by Samuel Bigham on his land to protect his family and neighbors from Indians. In June, 1756 the fort was attacked and the people in it, mostly women and children, were all captured or killed. The fort was largely destroyed. It was rebuilt in 1760 and abandoned in 1763. Fort Utah
Fort Utah (also known as Fort Provo) was the original European American settlement at modern-day Provo, Utah, United States. The settlement was established March 12, 1849 by President John S. Higbee with approximately 150 persons sent from Salt Lake City to Provo by President Brigham Young. Located west of present-day downtown Provo, the fort consisted of several log dwellings, surrounded by a palisade 20 by 40 rods in size (), with gates in the east and west ends, and a middle deck, for a cannon. Fort Deseret
Fort Deseret () is a former fort located in northeastern Millard County, Utah, United States, just south of Deseret. __TOC__ Description The fort was built in 1865 during the Utah Black Hawk War to protect settlers in western Utah from the attacks of local Utes. Due to U.S. Army obligations in the Civil War, local settlers were advised to take measures to defend themselves, resulting in the construction of the fort. The 550-foot square fort had 10-foot adobe walls. It proved useful when Black Hawk appeared in 1866 at Deseret demanding cattle. The security provided by the fortification allowed a peaceful settlement to be negotiated.
