Hans Finkelstein
Hans Finkelstein (17 May 1885, Leipzig, Germany - December 1938) was a German chemist. He is particularly known for the Finkelstein reaction developed by and named after him. Biography Hans Finkelstein came from a liberal Jewish family and joined the Protestant Church when he was 10 years old. He studied chemistry like his father Berthold Finkelstein, one of BASF's first chemists. After studying in Leipzig and Dresden he worked on his doctoral thesis with Johannes Thiele in Strasbourg from 1906, submitting it in 1909. Finkelstein continued his scientific work as assistant to Prof. Thiele until 1912. During this time he also translated scientific books into German with his father. In 1912 Finkelstein transitioned from university to industry as head of the research department at Bayer AG, Uerdingen. He filed some patents over the years. Norman Finkelstein
Norman Gary Finkelstein ( ; born December 8, 1953) is an American political scientist and activist. His primary fields of research are the politics of the Holocaust and the Israeli–Palestinian conflict. Finkelstein was born in New York City to Jewish Holocaust-survivor parents. He is a graduate of Binghamton University and received his Ph.D. in political science from Princeton University. He has held faculty positions at Brooklyn College, Rutgers University, Hunter College, New York University, and DePaul University, where he was an assistant professor from 2001 to 2007. In 2006, the department and college committees at DePaul University voted to grant Finkelstein tenure. For undisclosed reasons the university administration did not tenure him, and he announced his resignation after coming to a settlement with the university. Nathan Louis "Nat" Finkelstein (January 16, 1933 – October 2, 2009) was an American photographer and photojournalist. Finkelstein studied photography under Alexey Brodovitch, the art director of ''Harper's Bazaar'' and worked as a photojournalist for the Black Star and PIX photo agencies, reporting primarily on the political developments of various subcultures in New York City in the 1960s. In 1964, Finkelstein entered Andy Warhol's Factory as a photojournalist and remained for three years; Finkelstein's photographs from this period are now regarded as some of the most iconic of the time. Greater Wondergraph Company
Wondergraph, Wondergraph Theatre and variations were names given first to a technology, and then to picture theatres run first by the Continental Wondergraph Company (represented by two German men who arrived in Perth, Western Australia, in 1910); and then, in Adelaide, South Australia, by the Wondergraph Company (1910–1911), and then the Greater Wondergraph Company, established around 1911 and in existence until 1939. The Continental Wondergraph Company was registered in Perth in early 1910, and later that year set up an open-air cinema in Semaphore. This was followed in 1911 by the Wondergraph Theatre, an indoor picture theatre in Goodwood. Menachem Finkelstein
Menachem Finkelstein () was Israel's Military Advocate General from 2000 to 2004, during the height of the Second Intifada. Finkelstein was born in 1951 and received an Orthodox Jewish upbringing. He passed the Israeli bar exam in 1976. He served in the Judge Advocate General's office in the Israel Defense Forces, IDF from 1973 to 2004, becoming a Aluf, Major-General. He presided over the judgment that targeted killings were a legal part of the war on terror. In 2004 Hamas's Sheikh Yassin was killed under the policy. Mel Finkelstein was a Pulitzer Prize nominated photographer who rode the streets of New York City as a "camera cowboy" for more than 40 years working as a newspaper and freelance photographer.. Meir Finkelstein (; born 1951) is a cantor and composer of contemporary Jewish liturgical music. He has composed more than 200 settings for the liturgy, as well as scored numerous television programs, made-for-TV movies, and documentary films. His tunes are sung in many Conservative, Reform, and Reconstructionist congregations. He is considered one of the most popular contemporary Jewish liturgical composers in the United States. Early life Finkelstein was born in Israel in 1951. His father, the late Zvi Finkelstein, accepted a cantorial position in London, England, and the family moved there in 1955. Max Finkelstein (March 5, 1884 – May 3, 1940) was a captain in the New York City Police Department. Police career As president of Shomrim, a fraternal order of Jewish New York City police officers, he became famous in 1938 when Fiorello H. La Guardia picked him to lead a special squad whose job was to safeguard visiting officials from Nazi Germany and guard the German consulate. A popular belief was that La Guardia's decision to appoint Finkelstein and the other Jewish officers was inspired by actions taken by Theodore Roosevelt, when he was New York City Police Commissioner, who assigned 40 Jewish police officers to protect, and make look "ridiculous", Hermann Ahlwardt, when he gave an anti-semitic speech in New York. Louis Finkelstein (1923 – 20 June 2000) was an American painter, art critic and professor who taught for at Queens College, City University of New York. Several of his works have been compared to those of French artist and Post-Impressionist painter Paul Cézanne (1839–1906). Biography Born in New York City in 1923, Louis Finkelstein studied painting at the Cooper Union, the Art Students League of New York and the Brooklyn Museum School of Art that used to be located in the museum as a part of the Brooklyn Museum of Art. Louis Finkelstein (June 14, 1895, in Cincinnati, Ohio – 29 November 1991) was a Talmud scholar, an expert in Jewish law, and a leader of the Jewish Theological Seminary of America (JTS) and Conservative Judaism. Biography Louis (Eliezer) Finkelstein was born into a rabbinic family in Cincinnati on June 14, 1895. He moved with his parents to Brooklyn, New York as a youngster and graduated from the City College of New York in 1915. He received his PhD from Columbia University in 1918 and was ordained at the Jewish Theological Seminary of America (JTS) the following year.
