Falcon Records (Texas)
Falcon Records was a record label from McAllen, Texas, that was instrumental in the establishment of tejano as a widespread musical style. Founded in 1948 by Arnaldo Ramirez, the label specialized in the rural '' norteño'' music which had been abandoned by the major labels. By the early 1960s it was clearly the leading tejano music label. Falcon was responsible for numerous recordings by Los Alegres de Terán, Chelo Silva, René y René, Roberto Pulido, and many other tejano and norteño artists of significance. Falcon's product gained international exposure through the syndicated television program ''Fanfarria Falcon.'' The label's activities wound down around 1990, and the recordings were purchased by EMI. Tejano Music
Tejano music (), also known as Tex-Mex music, is a popular music style fusing Mexican influences. Its evolution began in northern Mexico (a variation of regional Mexican music known as ). It reached a larger audience in the late 20th century with the popularity of Mazz, Selena, and other performers like La Mafia, Ram Herrera, La Sombra, Elida Reyna, Elsa García, Laura Canales, Intocable, Jay Perez, Emilio Navaira, Esteban "Steve" Jordan, Shelly Lares, David Lee Garza, Jennifer Peña and La Fiebre. Chicano
Chicano (masculine form) or Chicana (feminine form) is an ethnic identity for Mexican Americans that emerged from the Chicano Movement. In the 1960s, ''Chicano'' was widely reclaimed among Hispanics in the building of a movement toward political empowerment, ethnic solidarity, and pride in being of Indigenous peoples of Mexico, Indigenous descent (with many Nahuatl language in the United States, using the Nahuatl language or Chicano names, names). Conjunto
The term ''conjunto'' (, literally 'group', 'ensemble') refers to several types of small musical ensembles present in different Latin American musical traditions, mainly in Mexico and Cuba. While Mexican conjuntos play styles such as '' norteño'' and ''tejano'', Cuban ''conjuntos'' specialize in the '' son'', as well as its derivations such as '' salsa''. Mexican Mexican conjunto music, also known as ''conjunto tejano'', was born in south Texas at the end of the 19th century, after German settlers introduced the button accordion. Ideal Records
Ideal Records was a record label from Texas specializing in Tejano music. It became the most important record label of the genre in the 1940s and 1950s, recording tejano's most prominent artists. It declined in the early 1960s, but not before leaving an indelible mark on Tex-Mex culture. History Ideal was founded by Paco Betancourt and Armando Marroquín in 1946, making it the first of southern Texas record labels owned by Mexican-Americans. Following the Second World War the major record labels such as RCA Records, RCA Victor ceased recording regional Chicano music, concentrating instead on larger "authentic" Hispanic markets in major metropolitan areas such as Mexico City. Falcon
Falcons () are birds of prey in the genus ''Falco'', which includes about 40 species. Some small species of falcons with long, narrow wings are called hobbies, and some that hover while hunting are called kestrels. Falcons are widely distributed on all continents of the world except Antarctica, though closely related raptors did occur there in the Eocene. Adult falcons have thin, tapered wings, which enable them to fly at high speed and change direction rapidly. White Whale Records was an American independent record label, founded in 1965 by Ted Feigin and Lee Lasseff in Los Angeles, California, and probably best known as the record label of the Turtles and a handful of one-hit wonder bands. White Whale, in addition to releasing almost all of the Turtles' discography, also released Nino Tempo and April Stevens's single "All Strung Out (On You)", a hit single by Rene y Rene titled "''Lo Mucho que ti Quiero''", an album by Liz Damon's Orient Express, and the only album by Texas band the Clique. Warren Zevon was a staff songwriter for the label, and they issued some of his earliest recordings (as part of the duo Lyme and Cybele). ''The Monitor'' is a newspaper in McAllen, Texas that covers Starr and Hidalgo counties. It was owned by Freedom Communications until 2012, when Freedom papers in Texas were sold to AIM Media Texas. ''The Monitors Spanish-language sister paper, '' La Frontera'', shut down in 2009. It shares content with the '' Valley Morning Star'' and ''The Brownsville Herald.'' Both are also owned by AIM Media Texas. Both its former publisher, M. Olaf Frandsen, and its former editor-in-chief, Steve Fagan, have worked at Pulitzer-winning newspapers.
