European Mathematical Society
The European Mathematical Society (EMS) is a European organization dedicated to the development of mathematics in Europe. Its members are different mathematical societies in Europe, academic institutions and individual mathematicians. The current president is Jan Philip Solovej, professor at the Department of Mathematics at the University of Copenhagen. Goals The Society seeks to serve all kinds of mathematicians in universities, research institutes and other forms of higher education. Belgian Mathematical Society
The Belgian Mathematical Society (abbreviated as BMS), founded in 1921 by Théophile de Donder at the Université libre de Bruxelles, is the national mathematical society of Belgium and a member society of the European Mathematical Society. Its mission is to assemble all Belgian mathematicians and defend their interests. Foreign members are also welcome. The Austrian Mathematical Society () is the national mathematical society of Austria and a member society of the European Mathematical Society. History The society was founded in 1903 by Ludwig Boltzmann, Gustav von Escherich, and Emil Müller as ''Mathematical Society in Vienna'' (). After the Second World War it resumed operation in May 1946 and was formally reestablished at the 10th of August 1946 by Rudolf Inzinger. Armenian Mathematical Union
The Armenian Mathematical Union or AMU (Armenian: , ՀՄՄ) is a mathematical society founded in Armenia in 1991. The AMU is based in Yerevan, and has been a member of the European Mathematical Society since 2016. It is recognised by the International Mathematics Union as the official mathematical society of Armenia. History The first association of Armenian mathematicians was formed in 1920, during the First Armenian Republic; its president was Ervand Kogbetlianz, a professor at Yerevan State University. The modern Armenian Mathematical Union was founded in 1991, the same year that Armenia gained independence due to the dissolution of the USSR. Paul Lévy (mathematician)
Paul Pierre Lévy (15 September 1886 – 15 December 1971) was a French mathematician who was active especially in probability theory, introducing fundamental concepts such as local time, stable distributions and characteristic functions. Lévy processes, Lévy flights, Lévy measures, Lévy's constant, the Lévy distribution, the Lévy area, the Lévy arcsine law, and the fractal Lévy C curve are named after him. Biography Lévy was born in Paris to a Jewish family which already included several mathematicians. His father Lucien Lévy was an examiner at the École Polytechnique. Lévy attended the École Polytechnique and published his first paper in 1905, at the age of nineteen, while still an undergraduate, in which he introduced the Lévy–Steinitz theorem. Volker Ludwig Mehrmann (born 1955) is a German mathematician. Education and career At Bielefeld University he completed his PhD in 1982 under Ludwig Elsner and his Habilitation in 1987 with a dissertation on control theory. Mehrmann was from 1990 to 1992 a ''Vertretungsprofessor'' (interim professor) at the RWTH Aachen University. From 1993 to 2000 he was a professor at the Chemnitz University of Technology. Since 2000 he has been a professor at the Institute for Mathematics at Technische Universität Berlin. Pavel Exner (born 30 March 1946 in Prague) is a Czech mathematical physicist. Life Born on March 30, 1946, in Prague, his parents were Vilem Exner, economist, and Marie, born Karvankova, ophthalmologist. He graduated in 1969 in theoretical physics from the Charles University in Prague. After working at the Charles University as an assistant professor, he moved in 1978 to the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research, Dubna in Russia. Due to peculiarities of the time he had no doctoral advisor and got his PhD only in 1983; still in Dubna he also got the higher doctorate in mathematical physics in 1990. Back to his home country in 1991 he became head of a mathematical-physics group in the Nuclear Physics Institute AS CR of the Czech Academy of Sciences. Marta Sanz-Solé
Marta Sanz-Solé (born 19 January 1952 in Sabadell, Barcelona) is a Catalan mathematician specializing in probability theory. She obtained her PhD in 1978 from the University of Barcelona under the supervision of David Nualart. Career Sanz-Solé is professor at the University of Barcelona, and head of the research group on stochastic processes. Prior to taking up her post at the UB, she was associate professor at the University Autònoma of Barcelona. She was Dean of the Faculty of Mathematics UB from 1993-1996, and Vice-president of the Division of Experimental Sciences and Mathematics from 2000-2003.
