European Brain And Behaviour Society
The European Brain and Behaviour Society (EBBS) is a scientific society founded in 1968 whose stated purpose is the exchange of information between European scientists interested in the relationships between brain mechanisms and behaviour. It is the oldest neuroscience society in Europe. Notable past presidents include Lawrence Weiskrantz, Giacomo Rizzolatti, Marc Jeannerod, John Aggleton, Barry Everitt, Susan Sara, Carmen Sandi and Francesca Cirulli; the current president is Igor Branchi. Lawrence Weiskrantz
Lawrence Weiskrantz (28 March 1926 – 27 January 2018) was a British neuropsychologist. Weiskrantz is credited with discovering the phenomenon of blindsight, and with establishing the role of the amygdala in emotional learning and emotional behavior. Blindsight is when a person with a brain injury causing blindness can nevertheless detect, point accurately at, and discriminate visually presented objects. Early life Weiskrantz originally attended Girard College, a boarding school in Philadelphia, due in part to the death of his father when he was six. After graduating, he attended Swarthmore College and served in World War II. Shortly before his graduation, he was awarded a Catherwood fellowship at Oxford University. Career Weiskrantz became Professor of Psychology at Oxford University where he remained a full professor until retirement in 1993. Giacomo Rizzolatti
Giacomo Rizzolatti (born 28 April 1937) is an Italian neurophysiologist who works at the University of Parma. Born in Kyiv, UkSSR, he is the Senior Scientist of the research team that discovered mirror neurons in the frontal and parietal cortex of the macaque monkey, and has written many scientific articles on the topic. He also proposed the premotor theory of attention. He is a past president of the European Brain and Behaviour Society. Rizzolatti was the 2007 co-recipient, with Leonardo Fogassi and Vittorio Gallese, for the University of Louisville Grawemeyer Award for Psychology. Marc Jeannerod
Marc Jeannerod (15 December 1935 – 1 July 2011) was a neurologist, a neurophysiologist and an internationally recognized expert in cognitive neuroscience and experimental psychology. His research focuses on the cognitive and neurophysiological mechanisms underpinning motor control, motor cognition, the sense of agency, and more recently language and social cognition. Jeannerod's work bridges with elegance and rigor various levels of analysis, ranging from neuroscience to philosophy of mind, with clear implications for the understanding of a number of psychiatric and neurological disorders, especially schizophrenia. John Aggleton
John Aggleton (born 14 June 1955 in Cardiff) is a British behavioural neuroscientist. Education and career Aggleton obtained his B.A. in natural sciences in 1976 at Cambridge University and his Ph.D. with his thesis entitled ''Anatomical and Functional Subdivisions of the Amygdala'' in 1980 from the University of Oxford. From 1983 he was first lecturer and then from 1992 senior lecturer in the department of psychology at the University of Durham. Since 1994, he has been professor of cognitive neuroscience at Cardiff University, where he studies the architecture of the brain and how various brain structures work together to provide different forms of memory. Barry Everitt (scientist)
Barry John Everitt FRS, FMedSci, ScD, was Master of Downing College, Cambridge and is Professor of Behavioural Neuroscience and director of research at the University of Cambridge. Since 2013 he is Provost of the Gates Cambridge Trust at Cambridge University. Education Everitt graduated in zoology and psychology at the University of Hull and received his PhD degree from the University of Birmingham on behavioural neuroendocrinology. Carmen Sandi (born 1961) is a Spanish and Swiss behavioral neuroscientist. She is a professor of neuroscience and director of the Laboratory of Behavioral Genetics at the Brain Mind Institute (École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne). Federation Of European Neuroscience Societies
The Federation of European Neuroscience Societies (FENS) is a European federation of scientific societies for basic scientists and physicians whose research is focused on the brain and nervous system (i.e., neuroscience). History The federation was founded in 1998 to coordinate and present at the European level the research of members of national and European neuroscience societies. It succeeded the European Neuroscience Association. FENS federates 44 member societies and 5 associate member societies, representing around 23,000 scientists. Activities FENS organises an international scientific meeting in even years, the FENS Forum of European Neuroscience. Every meeting takes place in a different European country hosted by its national neuroscience society. In the odd years that no Forum meeting takes place, a FENS Regional Meeting is held.
