Saint Catherine, Egypt
Saint Catherine ( ar, سانت كاترين, ; el, Αγία Αικατερίνη; also spelled St. Katrine) is a city in the South Sinai Governorate of Egypt, at the foot of Mount Sinai. The city is famous for being the site of Saint Catherine's Monastery. The city is located above sea level and is away from Nuweiba. In 1994, its population was 4,603 people. The Saint Catherine area is a UNESCO world heritage site, officially declared as such in 2002. History Pharaonic era Although Saint Catherine was not established as a city at that time, it was always part of the Egyptian Empire throughout history and it was part of the province of "Deshret Reithu." In the 16th century BC, the Egyptian pharaohs built the way of Shur across Sinai to Beersheba and on to Jerusalem. South Sinai Governorate
South Sinai Governorate ( ar, محافظة جنوب سيناء ') is the least populated governorate of Egypt. It is located in the east of the country, encompassing the southern half of the Sinai Peninsula. Saint Catherine's Monastery, an Eastern Orthodox Church monastery and UNESCO World Heritage Site of world renown, is located in the central part of the governorate.
