Edwin Leonard (November 17, 1823 – April 5, 1900) was a Sergeant in the Union Army and a Medal of Honor recipient for his actions in the American Civil War. The United States Army Center of Military History (CMH) is a directorate within the United States Army Training and Doctrine Command. The Institute of Heraldry remains within the Office of the Administrative Assistant to the Secretary of the Army. The center is responsible for the appropriate use of history and military records throughout the United States Army. Traditionally, this mission has meant recording the official history of the army in both peace and war, while advising the army staff on historical matters. 37th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry Regiment
The 37th Regiment Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry was an infantry regiment in the Union army during the American Civil War. History The regiment was formed in September 1862 at Camp Briggs under Major Oliver Edwards and served until the end of the war in April 1865. Companies A, B, and C were Zouaves units known as the "Tremont Zouaves" under the command of Capt. C.S. Bird. Their uniforms consisted of a dark blue jacket with red trim, a long red wool sash, chasseur trousers of dark blue wool, a red stocking fez cap, and white canvas leggings. The 37th Massachusetts saw action at many battles including Fredericksburg and Gettysburg, including duty in New York City after the draft riot.
