''For the botanist see Edward Lee Greene'' Edward Lawrence Greene (March 29, 1884 – September 27, 1952) was an American football player and coach of football and baseball. Biography Greenewas born on March 29, 1884 in New Haven, Connecticut. He served as the head football coach at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1908 and at North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts, now North Carolina State University, from 1909 to 1913, compiling a career college football record of 28–11–5. Greene was also the head baseball coach at North Carolina A&M for one season in 1912, tallying a mark of 13–6–1. He played college football at the University of Pennsylvania, where he was named an All-American in 1906. He later served as the general manager of the National Better Business Bureau until his death. Edward Lee Greene (August 20, 1843–November 10, 1915) was an American botanist known for his numerous publications including the two-part ''Landmarks of Botanical History'' and the describing of over 4,400 species of plants in the American West. Early life Edward Lee Greene was born on August 20, 1843 in Hopkinton, Rhode Island. In 1859 Greene moved to Wisconsin and began studying at Albion Academy, a very reputable institution with a religious emphasis. There Greene met Thure Kumlien, a Swedish Naturalist with an interest in botany. Greene accompanied Kumlein on field trips, further developing Greene's interest in botany. In August 1862, Greene joined his father and brothers in joining the 13th Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry Regiment of the Union Army. Though he never rose above the rank of private in his three years of service, Greene was able to advance his botanical studies, collecting specimens as he marched through Tennessee, Kentucky and Alabama. The 1911 college football season was the last one before major reforms were made to the American game in 1912. In 1911, touchdowns were worth five points, the field was 110 yards in length, and a team had three downs within which to advance the ball ten yards. The United States Naval Academy (Navy) finished with a record of 6 wins and 3 ties (6–0–3). Two of the ties were 0–0 games with the other major unbeaten teams, Penn State (8–0–1) and Princeton (8–0–2). Other teams that finished the season unbeaten were Minnesota (6–0–1) and Florida (5–0–1).
