EU Parliament
The European Parliament (EP) is one of the legislative bodies of the European Union and one of its seven institutions. Together with the Council of the European Union (known as the Council and informally as the Council of Ministers), it adopts European legislation, following a proposal by the European Commission. The Parliament is composed of 705 members (MEPs). It represents the second-largest democratic electorate in the world (after the Parliament of India), with an electorate of 375 million eligible voters in 2009. Since 1979, the Parliament has been directly elected every five years by the citizens of the European Union through universal suffrage. Voter turnout in parliamentary elections decreased each time after 1979 until 2019, when voter turnout increased by eight percentage points, and rose above 50% for the first time since 1994. Michal Šimečka
Michal Šimečka (born May 10, 1984 in Bratislava) is a Slovak politician, journalist, researcher, and a Member of the European Parliament since 2019. He is the vice president, and one of the founding members, of the liberal party Progressive Slovakia, having successfully led the party's candidate list in the 2019 elections, where they received the highest percentage of the national vote. In February 2020, Šimečka was elected as vice president of the liberal fraction Renew Europe. Early life and education Šimečka earned a bachelor's degree in political sciences and international relations from the Charles University in Prague in 2006. He then obtained an MPhil in Russian and East European Studies at St Antony's College at the University of Oxford in 2008, before moving to Nuffield College, where he received a DPhil in Politics and International Relations in 2012. Greens–European Free Alliance
The Greens/European Free Alliance (Greens/EFA) is a political group of the European Parliament composed primarily of green and regionalist political parties. Formed following the 1999 European elections for the 5th European Parliament, the Greens/EFA group now consists of five distinct European political parties, namely the larger European Green Party (EGP) and part of the European Free Alliance (EFA) and the smaller European Pirate Party (PPEU), Volt Europa (Volt), and part of Animal Politics EU (APEU). The EFA consists of parties representing stateless nations, regionalist and minority political interests. The group has generally limited its membership to progressive parties. Stéphane Séjourné
Stéphane Séjourné (born 26 March 1985) is a French lawyer and politician who was elected as a Member of the European Parliament (MEP) in 2019. Since 2021 he has led Renew Europe. Early life and education Séjourné grew up in Buenos Aires and later did an exchange program in Spain. Early career After working in the office of Jean-Paul Huchon at the Regional Council of Île-de-France from 2012 to 2014, Séjourné became an adviser to Minister of the Economy and Finance Emmanuel Macron. When Macron became president in the 2017 elections, Séjourné came along as a political adviser, working alongside Alexis Kohler and Ismaël Emelien. Renew Europe
Renew Europe (Renew) is a liberal, pro-European political group of the European Parliament founded for the ninth European Parliament term. The group is the successor to the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe (ALDE) group which existed during the sixth, seventh and eighth terms from 2004 to 2019. Renew Europe in the European Committee of the Regions is the sister group of Renew Europe. History In May 2019, speaking at a debate leading up to the 2019 European Parliament election, Guy Verhofstadt, president of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe (ALDE) group, announced that, following the election, the ALDE Group intended to dissolve and form a new alliance with French President Emmanuel Macron's "Renaissance" electoral list. Iratxe García
Iratxe García Pérez (; born 7 October 1974) is a Spanish politician of the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE). She has served as Member of the European Parliament since 2004, and has served as the Leader of the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats parliamentary group since 2019.
