British and American forces fought several engagements on Lake Ontario for control of the lake during the War of 1812. Ultimately, only a few actions were fought, none of which had decisive results. Melancthon Taylor Woolsey (1782 – 18 May 1838) was an officer in the United States Navy during the War of 1812 and battles on the Great Lakes. He supervised warship construction at Navy Point in Sackets Harbor, New York, and later had a full career in the Navy. Early life Woolsey was born near Plattsburgh, New York. He was a son of Melancthon Lloyd Woolsey (1758–1819), a Maj.-Gen. of the New York Militia during the Revolutionary War and Alida ( Livingston) Woolsey (1758–1843), a daughter of the Rev. George Prevost
Sir George Prevost, 1st Baronet (19 May 1767 – 5 January 1816) was a British Army officer and colonial administrator who is most well known as the "Defender of Canada" during the War of 1812. Born in New Jersey, the eldest son of Genevan Augustine Prévost, he joined the British Army as a youth and became a captain in 1784. Prevost served in the West Indies during the French Revolutionary Wars and the Napoleonic Wars, and was commander of St. Vincent from 1794 to 1796. He became Lieutenant-Governor of Saint Lucia from 1798 to 1802 and Governor of Dominica from 1802 to 1805. York, Upper Canada
York was a town and the second capital of the colony of Upper Canada. It is the predecessor to the Old Toronto, old city of Toronto (1834–1998). It was established in 1793 by Lieutenant-Governor John Graves Simcoe as a "temporary" location for the capital of Upper Canada, while he made plans to build a capital near today's London, Ontario. Simcoe renamed the location York after Prince Frederick, Duke of York and Albany, George III of the United Kingdom, George III's second son. The Battle of Kingston Harbour, was a naval battle of the War of 1812 fought on November 10th, 1812 between American and British naval forces in Kingston harbour, as well as Canadian militia from Kingston. It was the only time the British stronghold at Kingston was attacked during the war, and the only time that shots were ever fired from Fort Henry. A broad pennant is a triangular swallow-tailed naval pennant flown from the masthead of a warship afloat or a naval headquarters ashore to indicate the presence of either: (a) a Royal Navy officer in the rank of Commodore, or (b) a U.S. Navy Captain serving in a designated Commodore command billet. A corvette is a small warship. It is traditionally the smallest class of vessel considered to be a proper (or " rated") warship.
