Eastern Ukraine Campaign
Ukraine's easternmost oblasts, Donetsk, Luhansk, and Kharkiv, have been the site of an ongoing theatre of operation since the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. The battle of Donbas was a major offensive in the eastern theatre that took place in mid-2022. By the culmination of the offensive in July 2022, Russian forces and their separatist allies had captured the cities of Sievierodonetsk, Lysychansk, Rubizhne and Izium. However, in early September, Ukraine launched a major counteroffensive in the east, which recaptured the cities of Izium, Balakliia, Kupiansk, Sviatohirsk and the strategic city of Lyman, Ukraine, Lyman. The counteroffensive stalled east of the Oskil river, and Luhansk Oblast campaign, a campaign in eastern Kharkiv Oblast and western Luhansk Oblast has continued since, though Donetsk Oblast has remained the most active area of the frontline. Ukrainsk
Ukrainsk (, ; , ) is a city in Selydove urban hromada, Pokrovsk Raion, Donetsk Oblast, Ukraine. The population was estimated at 10,655 in 2022, which went down from 13,236 in 2001. The city has been under Russian occupation since September 2024. An oblast (, ; ), sometimes translated as region or province, is the main type of first-level administrative divisions of Ukraine, administrative division of Ukraine. Eastern Ukraine
Eastern Ukraine or East Ukraine (; ) is primarily the territory of Ukraine east of the Dnipro (or Dnieper) river, particularly Kharkiv, Luhansk and Donetsk oblasts (provinces). Dnipropetrovsk and Zaporizhzhia oblasts are often also regarded as "eastern Ukraine". Almost a third of the country's population lives in the region, which includes several cities with population of around a million. The Institute for the Study of War (ISW) is an American nonprofit research group and advocacy think tank founded in 2007 by military historian Kimberly Kagan and headquartered in Washington, D.C. Kurakhove
Kurakhove (, ; , ) is a city in Pokrovsk Raion, Donetsk Oblast, eastern Ukraine. Population: 21,479 (2001). Kurakhove is home to the Kurakhove Power Station. The city has been under Russian occupation since December 2024, the power station since January 2025. History In 1969, during the expansion of the Kurakhove State District Power Plant (DRES), archaeologists uncovered 18 nomadic burials from the 12th century in the Velika Mohyla burial mound. These excavations revealed chainmail, a dagger, a saber, a quiver of arrows, and the skeleton of a horse with its bridle, indicating the area's significance during that period.
