E Street Complex
The E Street Complex, also known as the "Navy Hill Complex," the "Potomac Hill Complex," the "Observatory Hill Complex," and the "Pickle Factory," is the historic site of the primary headquarters facility of the Office of Strategic Services, and the first headquarters building of the Central Intelligence Agency. It is geographically located near 23rd Street and E Street in Washington, D.C. This complex was unassuming, appearing to be a mix of normal government offices and apartment buildings to nearby residents and office workers. The OSS Society and United States Department of State, State Department engaged in efforts with the National Park Service to add the E Street Complex to the National Register of Historic Places. Office Of Strategic Services
The Office of Strategic Services (OSS) was the first intelligence agency of the United States, formed during World War II. The OSS was formed as an agency of the Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) to coordinate espionage activities behind enemy lines for all branches of the United States Armed Forces. Other OSS functions included the use of propaganda, subversion, and post-war planning. The OSS was dissolved a month after the end of the war. Intelligence tasks were shortly later resumed and carried over by its successors, the Strategic Services Unit (SSU), the United States Department of State, Department of State's Bureau of Intelligence and Research (INR), and the Central Intelligence Group (CIG), the intermediary precursor to the independent Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). OSS Society
Formerly known as the Veterans of the OSS, the OSS Society is the association of veterans of the Office of Strategic Services, dedicated to preserving the legacy of the famed intelligence agency. The Veterans of the OSS was founded in 1947 by General William Donovan. In 1997, the name OSS Society was adopted, and the Society moved to Washington, DC. The OSS Society is currently in efforts with other IC organizations to create a National Museum of Intelligence and Special Operations in Virginia. Old Naval Observatory
The Old Naval Observatory is a historic site at 23rd and E Street in Northwest, Washington, D.C. It is where the United States Naval Observatory was located from 1844 to 1893, when it moved to its present grounds. The original observatory building, built 183940, still stands, and is a designated National Historic Landmark as of 1965. The Washington meridian of 1850 passes through the Observatory. The campus around the old observatory is split into two parts: the Potomac Annex to the east (where the observatory stands) and the E Street Complex, also known as Navy Hill, to the west. These two parts are separated geographically as the Potomac Annex is at the top of the hill, while the E Street Complex is farther down.
