''Dragonslayer'' is a board game published by Simulations Publications, Inc. (SPI) in 1981 that is based on the movie of the same name. Description ''Dragonslayer'' is a game for 2–4 players in which the players are magicians competing to free the fictional land of Urland from its last dragon, Vermithrax Pejorative. Game components The game contains *17" x 22" map of Urland *100 die-cut counters *11" x 17" Battle Display * sheet of rules * quick reference sheet with examples Setup Each player selects a magician and an abode and places two King's men on the map. The Dragonshield and Ulrich are placed on the map, and tiles are placed facedown on the towns and hamlets. Gameplay Each magician takes their turn in a particular order: Aurric, Merridyds, Old Kyvin, Galen. Each magician wants to build up their strength and their magical items before taking on the Dragon. ''Dragonslayer'' is a 1981 American dark fantasy film directed by Matthew Robbins, from a screenplay he co-wrote with Hal Barwood. It stars Peter MacNicol, Ralph Richardson, John Hallam, and Caitlin Clarke. It is a co-production between Paramount Pictures and Walt Disney Productions, where Paramount handled North American distribution and Disney's Buena Vista International handled international distribution. The story is set in a fictional medieval kingdom, where a young wizard experiences danger and opposition as he hunts the dragon, Vermithrax Pejorative. It was the second joint production between Paramount and Disney, after ''Popeye'' (1980), and is more mature than most contemporary Disney films. David Ladyman
David Ladyman is an American game designer of board games such as ''Car Wars'', and role-playing games such as ''GURPS''. Career In 1977, while studying linguistics as a grad student at University of Texas at Austin, Ladyman began playtesting games for Metagaming Concepts, especially those designed by Steve Jackson. When Jackson left Metagaming to form Steve Jackson Games (SJG), Ladyman continued to test games for him, including ''Illuminati'' and ''Car Wars''. Ladyman then became a games convention organizer, helping to facilitate Texcon for several years, and joining the head staff of Origins Game Fair for a year. In 1990, Ladyman co-designed the second edition of the horror role-playing game ''Chill'' (1990) for Mayfair Games, with Louis Prosperi and Jeff Leason. ''The Space Gamer'' was a magazine dedicated to the subject of science fiction and fantasy board games and tabletop role-playing games. It quickly grew in importance and was an important and influential magazine in its subject matter from the late 1970s through the mid-1980s. ''Ares'' was an American science fiction wargame magazine published by Simulations Publications, Inc. (SPI), and then TSR, Inc., between 1980 and 1984. In addition to the articles, each issue contained a wargame, complete with a foldout stiff paper map, a set of cardboard counters, and the rules. Publication history Simulations Publications, Inc. (SPI) began publishing ''Ares'' in 1980 as a science-fiction companion to ''Strategy & Tactics''.''Ares'' magazine was similar to ''Strategy & Tactics'', with a game every issue, but it focused on science-fiction and fantasy.
