Discovery (U.S. TV Series)
''Discovery'' is an American television program, produced by ABC News, that was geared towards children and teenagers. The program began on October 1, 1962 as a weekday afternoon series. In September 1963, the show was moved to midday Sunday, and remained there until it was canceled in September 1971. Overview The program was hosted by actor/announcer Frank Buxton and actress/vocalist Virginia Gibson. The show's original studio announcer was ABC staff announcer Bill Owen, who replaced Buxton as host in 1966, continuing through 1971. The episodes hosted by Buxton were mostly studio productions, video taped in black-and-white with occasional out of studio segments shot on 16mm film. Beginning with Owen, the episodes were shot in color, and involved much travel to on-site locations around the world. Frank Buxton
Frank Buxton (February 13, 1930 – January 2, 2018) was an American actor, television writer, author, and television director. Buxton grew up in Larchmont, New York. He was a graduate of Northwestern University (B.S.) and Syracuse University (M.S.), and served in the U.S. Army in Korea. Career Buxton's acting career extends from summer theatre in ''Three Men on a Horse'' with the legendary Buster Keaton at age 19. He worked as a producer-director at WGN-TV in Chicago, as well as Buffalo stations WGR-TV and WBUF-TV. Turning to performing, Buxton performed his own stand-up comedy act at comedy clubs from coast to coast. He toured Australia for a year as Albert in '' Bye Bye Birdie''. His first TV credit was as host and producer of the ABC television documentary series, ''Discovery'' co-hosted by actress/singer Virginia Gibson from 1962 to 1966. Make A Wish (TV Series)
''Make a Wish'' is an American children's television series which ran on ABC from 1971 to 1976. Produced by ABC News, it was hosted by musician Tom Chapin and created and produced by Lester Cooper. It replaced ''Discovery'', a similar series for children also produced by ABC News since 1962. Each episode of the series, broadcast on Sunday mornings, focused on a particular theme. One episode, for instance, was about snakes, and another was about motorcycles. Chapin would introduce the topic in much the same manner: "I think a snake is what I'll be. Imagine all the possibilities." After that there would be a sort of free association presentation on the theme featuring stock footage, animation and Chapin's music and voiceover commentary. ''Animals, Animals, Animals'' is a 1976–1981 educational television series on ABC about animals. A hound is a type of hunting dog used by hunters to track or chase prey. Description Hounds can be contrasted with gun dogs that assist hunters by identifying prey and/or recovering shot quarry. The hound breeds were the first hunting dogs. They have either a powerful sense of smell, great speed, or both. Bill Owen, widely known as the "King of Trivia", is a writer and radio/television announcer whose career spans six decades. He served as host and announcer for the children's program ''Discovery'' in the 1960s. Family Bill Owen was born in Grand Forks, North Dakota, on February 1, 1931. His father Owen T. Owen (born in Milbank, South Dakota on September 15, 1890) was an outstanding track star at the University of North Dakota where he graduated from law school. Virginia Gibson (born Virginia Gorski; April 9, 1925 – April 25, 2013) was an American dancer, singer and actress of film, television and musical theatre. Early years Of Polish and Irish lineage, Gibson was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John S. Gorski. She graduated from St. Alphonsus Parochial School. Career Gibson, who was signed by Warner Bros. in 1950 and made her film debut in ''Tea for Two (film), Tea for Two'' (1950), started her career in musicals in her hometown of St. Louis, Missouri.
