Der Letzte Zeuge
''Der letzte Zeuge'' (''The Last Witness'') is a German crime television series set in Berlin. Created by Gregor Edelmann, it aired on ZDF from 1998 to 2007 and was mostly directed by Bernhard Stephan. It stars Ulrich Mühe as medical examiner Dr Robert Kolmaar, along with Gesine Cukrowski as his colleague Dr Judith Sommer and Jörg Gudzuhn as commissioner Johannes "Joe" Hoffer. After Mühe's death in 2007, both Gudzuhn and Cukrowski stated they did not want to continue without him, which is why the ZDF would later announce the series' termination. Gregor Edelmann
Gregor Edelmann (born 1954) is a German journalist, screenwriter and dramaturge based in Berlin. Life Edelmann was born in Suhl, an industrial town near Erfurt in the southern part of what was then the German Democratic Republic (East Germany). He studied Germanistics and, later, Dramaturgy. His teachers included Heiner Müller. Between 1981 and 1989, he was employed as a dramaturge for East German drama by Henschel-Theaterverlag (theatrical publishers) in Berlin. Between 1988 and 2006, he lived with the actress Vera Oelschlegel. In 1990, together with the theatrical polymath , they founded the (Theatre of the East) which for nearly two decades recalled and celebrated the theatrical traditions of the separate Germany that had come to an end in 1990. The medical examiner is an appointed official in some American jurisdictions who is trained in pathology that investigates deaths that occur under unusual or suspicious circumstances, to perform post-mortem examinations, and in some jurisdictions to initiate inquests. In the US, there are two death investigation systems, the coroner system based on English law, and the medical examiner system, which evolved from the coroner system during the latter half of the 19th century. The type of system varies from municipality to municipality and from state to state, with over 2,000 separate jurisdictions for investigating unnatural deaths. In 2002, 22 states had a medical examiner system, 11 states had a coroner system, and 18 states had a mixed system. Since the 1940s, the medical examiner system has gradually replaced the coroner system, and serves about 48% of the US population.
